WILMINGTON, Del. – Making the first start of his college career, sophomore guard
Charles Jackson (Brandywine H.S./Wilmington, Del.) made 8 of 16 shots from the floor and scored a game-high 22 points as Goldey-Beacom College (4-6, 2-1) snapped a two-game losing streak with a 76-62 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Caldwell College (3-7, 0-3) at the Lightning's Joseph West Jones College Center on Saturday afternoon.
Jackson, who recorded his second 20-point effort of the season, scored 13 of his 22 points in the first half as the Lightning earned their third straight victory over the Cougars.
Led by six points from sophomore guard
Marcus Porter (Howard H.S./Wilmington, Del.), the Lightning sprinted out to a 22-9 lead in the opening 10 minutes of the game.
After the teams traded field goals three times, including a pair of three-point field goals, the Cougars closed the deficit to 32-25 by going on an 8-2 spurt over a two-minute span. Freshman guard
Dawan Lighty (Kennedy H.S./Paterson, N.J.) scored four of the Cougars' eight points during the spurt.
But, the Lightning answered with an 11-2 run, including a pair of three-point field goals by Jackson, to expand their advantage to 43-27 with 2:50 remaining in the period.
A pair of jumpers from junior guard
A.J. Picard (Souderton Area H.S./Skippack, Pa.) sandwiched a quick three-point spurt by the Cougars to end the first half, giving Goldey-Beacom a 47-32 cushion at the intermission.
Trailing by 15 points to begin the second half, the Cougars opened the second half by scoring 11 of the first 17 points to narrow the margin to 53-43 with 14:22 remaining on back-to-back lay-ups by sophomore forward
Michael Balkovic (St. John Vianney H.S./Neptune, N.J.).
However, the Lightning used a quick 11-2 spurt over a three-minute span to increase the advantage to 64-45 on a lay-up by junior forward
Jordan Thorpe (Mount Zion Christian Academy/Newburgh, N.Y.) with 10:32 left.
The Cougars trimmed the margin to 64-56 by putting together an 11-0 run, including five made free throws, over the next four minutes.
But, the Lightning secured the victory by scoring 12 of the final 18 points to end the game.
While Jackson led the Lightning to the victory, Porter posted the third “double double” of his career by setting season highs with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Meanwhile, Picard contributed 22 points and matched a season high with seven rebounds.
Sophomore guard
Kevin Walker (St. Peter's Prep/Bayonne, N.J.) scored 14 points with six rebounds and four steals in a losing effort for Caldwell while Balkovic added 12 points and eight rebounds.
