Opening Tip-Off
Looking to extend their two-game win streak, the Lightning will wrap up a quick two-game homestand on Saturday afternoon when they welcome Caldwell College to the Joseph West Jones College Center for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match-up. Opening tip-off between the Lightning and the Cougars is slated for 2 p.m. or approximately 25 minutes after the conclusion of the men's game between Goldey-Beacom and Caldwell. In addition, live stats and a video broadcast of Saturday's game will be available on the Lightning's official athletics website, www.gbcathletics.com.
Updating the Lightning
After posting a 66-60 victory over Georgian Court on Tuesday night, the Lightning enter Saturday's game against the Cougars with a 5-5 overall record and a 2-1 mark in the CACC. Senior guard Devonne Richardson led the Lightning to the victory by posting her third “double double” of the season by scoring a game-high 18 points along with a season-high 14 rebounds as the Lightning jumped out to a commanding lead in the first half before the Lions made a comeback effort in the second half. The 10th-leading scorer in the CACC, Richardson leads the Lightning with a 12.7 average while senior forward Irene Hudson has contributed 11.7 points per game.
Scouting Caldwell
Currently 2-9 overall and 1-2 in the CACC, the Cougars have lost 9 of their last 10 games after dropping a tough 70-62 verdict at Post University on Tuesday evening. The Cougars trailed by a 16-4 margin to open the game before rallying to take a lead into the second half. But, the Eagles used a 21-5 run to regain a lead they did not relinquish en route to the victory. Senior guard Torey Jones, who is the third-leading scorer in the CACC with a 17.5 average, tallied 17 of her game-high 21 points in the second half while contributing nine rebounds. Meanwhile, junior forward Jeanette Anderson added 9 points with 10 rebounds. The Cougars will be playing on the road for the 10th time in 12 games this season when they visit Goldey-Beacom on Saturday.
Last Year's Meeting Against Caldwell
Led by 14 points from guard Torey Jones, the Cougars ended the Lightning's six-game win streak with a 67-56 verdict in last year's meeting at the Newman Center. Jones, who also had five rebounds, made 5 of 15 shots from the floor and also contributed three steals for the Cougars, who never trailed in the game. Senior guard Devonne Richardson led the Lightning with a game-high 16 points along with 12 rebounds while senior forward Akilah Sewell added 10 points with 12 rebounds.
Series Business: Caldwell
Since the start of the 2002-03 season, the Lightning and the Cougars have met 15 times in a series that Caldwell leads by an 11-4 margin. In addition, the Cougars have won four of the last five meetings after last year's 67-56 victory. The Lightning's last win in the series came on Jan. 23, 2010 in a 73-72 overtime victory over the Cougars as senior guard Devonne Richardson scored the eventual game-winning basket on a jumper with six seconds remaining in the overtime period. Richardson finished the game with a “double double” by scoring 13 points with 11 rebounds and six assists. Meanwhile, Janae Weldon tallied a game-high 26 points for the Lightning, who made six of seven field goal attempts in the overtime period.
Lightning Outlast Georgian Court to Earn Second Straight Win
Led by an 18-point, 14-rebound performance from senior guard Devonne Richardson, the Lightning won their second straight game and evened their record to 5-5 with an exciting 66-60 CACC victory over Georgian Court on Tuesday evening at the Jones Center. Richardson, who tallied her third “double double” of the season, struggled by making just 3 of 10 field goal attempts but converted 12 of 22 free throws to pace the Lightning. She also had a game-high four steals and added three assists. Meanwhile, senior forward Irene Hudson contributed 11 points in the win.
Post-Game Notes: Georgian Court
• The Lightning have now defeated the Lions in 14 consecutive meetings.
• The Lightning set season highs with 22 made free throws and 34 free throw attempts. Conversely, they also allowed a season-high 31 made free throws and 40 free throw attempts against Georgian Court.
• The Lightning limited Georgian Court to just 23.0 per cent shooting from the field, marking the lowest field goal percentage by a Goldey-Beacom opponent this season.
• Sophomore guard Taylor Leonard matched her career high by scoring nine points against the Lions on Tuesday night. She also had nine points in the Lightning's win over Georgian Court on Jan. 5 of last year.
• Sophomore forward Chelsea Grover recorded a career-high four blocks in the win over Georgian Court. She also matched her season high by scoring eight points.
Another Quest for 1,000 for Richardson
Senior guard Devonne Richardson has the opportunity to become the second player in school history to record 1,000 career rebounds this season. After posting a season-high 14 rebounds in the Lightning's win on Tuesday night, the Baltimore, Md. native ranks second in school history with 941 career rebounds and needs 86 rebounds to become the school's all-time leader. With 96 rebounds in 10 games this season, Richardson ranks fourth in the CACC with a 9.6 average and has tallied 10 or more rebounds in four consecutive games.
What's Ahead for Goldey-Beacom
The Lightning will make their shortest road trip of the season by visiting Wilmington University on Monday night at 8 p.m.
