Updating the Lightning
With a 71-45 victory over Concordia on Friday night, the Lightning snapped a five-game losing streak and earned their first CACC victory of the season. Now 4-5 overall and 1-1 in the CACC, the Lightning were led by senior guard Ashley Rosario, who scored a season-high 13 points by making 6 of 10 field goal attempts off the bench. Meanwhile, junior guard Briana Richmond-Peters grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds for the Lightning, who earned their first win since a 67-66 victory at Kutztown on Nov. 12. Senior guard Devonne Richardson leads the Lightning with a 12.1 scoring average while senior forward Irene Hudson has averaged 11.8 points per game.
Scouting Georgian Court
After opening the season with a victory over Chestnut Hill, the Lions have dropped five straight games and bring a 1-5 overall record into Tuesday's match-up against the Lightning. The Lions, who will be playing on the road for the fourth time in the last five games, are coming off an 87-71 setback against Caldwell on Saturday afternoon. Senior guard Shauneia McPhearson led the Lions with a team-high 19 points in Saturday's loss, making 8 of 19 field goal attempts while contributing six rebounds. Meanwhile, senior forward Christina White had a “double double” with 14 points and a team-high 13 rebounds. McPhearson is the Lions' leading scorer with a 15.7 average while White averages a team-high 10.5 rebounds per outing.
Last Year's Meetings Against Georgian Court
The Lightning swept the season series against Georgian Court last year, winning by a 74-59 margin in the first meeting before posting an 88-52 triumph in the second game at the Joseph West Jones College Center. Senior forward Irene Hudson scored 20 points by making 10 of 13 field goal attempts in the first win at Georgian Court while senior guard Devonne Richardson led the Lightning in the second win with a game-high 16 points and 12 rebounds. With the two victories, the Lightning extended their win streak over Georgian Court to 13 consecutive games, a streak dating back to the 2005-06 season.
The Best Things in Life Are Free
Senior forward Irene Hudson became the seventh player in school history to make at least 250 career free throws when she converted all six of her attempts in the Lightning's loss against LIU Post on Nov. 25. With 260 career made free throws, she ranks sixth on the Lightning's all-time list. In addition, Hudson has attempted 464 free throws in her career, the third-highest total in Lightning women's basketball history. So far this season, Hudson is 26-for-34 (.64) from the free throw line, but has made 16 of her last 18 attempts over the last four games.
Three of a Kind
A trio of seniors - Jacinda Jones, Irene Hudson and Devonne Richardson - are ranked among the Lightning's all-time scoring leaders and are three of seven players in school history to reach 1,000 career points. Jones, a sixth-year senior, moved into third place on the Lightning's all-time list after scoring nine points at Concordia on Friday night. Meanwhile, Hudson ranks sixth in school history with 1,114 points while Richardson is the latest player to reach 1,000 points. Entering Tuesday's game against the Lions, Richardson ranks seventh in school history with 1,073 career points.
Cleaning the Boards
Senior guard Devonne Richardson has the opportunity to become the second player in school history to record 1,000 career rebounds this season. After tallying 82 rebounds in the Lightning's first nine games, the Baltimore, Md. native ranks third in school history with 927 career rebounds and needs 100 rebounds to become the school's all-time leader. As a junior, Richardson ranked fifth in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference by averaging 9.7 rebounds per game. In addition, she had 10 or more rebounds in a game 13 times, including a season-high 20 rebounds against Concordia in a 75-64 victory on Feb. 18.
