PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Playing in the 100th game of her college career, senior guard
Devonne Richardson (Milford Mill Academy/Baltimore, Md.) scored a season-high 24 points and added nine rebounds to lead Goldey-Beacom College (8-6, 5-1) to its fifth win in the last six games, a 66-52 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Chestnut Hill College (1-10, 0-5) at the Griffins' Sorgenti Arena on Wednesday afternoon.
The seventh player in school history to appear in 100 career games, Richardson scored 14 of her 24 points in the second half as the Lightning earned their seventh consecutive victory over the Griffins.
Led by four points from senior forward
Irene Hudson (Corcoran H.S./Syracuse, N.Y.), the Lightning jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the opening five minutes of the first half.
After the Griffins closed the margin to 13-8 with 13:03 left in the opening stanza, the Lightning used a 15-4 run to increase their advantage to 29-12 on a free throw by sophomore forward
Chelsea Grover (Seneca H.S./Southampton, N.J.) with six minutes left in the period.
The Griffins ended the first half by scoring 9 of the final 14 points, trimming the deficit to 34-21 at the intermission.
After Richardson opened the second half with a lay-up, the Griffins scored seven consecutive points to narrow the gap to 36-28 with 18:15 remaining in the period on a pair of free throws by sophomore guard
Olivia Gorczynski (Cardinal McCarrick H.S./Parlin, N.J.).
But, the Lightning answered by scoring 8 of the next 11 points, including five points from Richardson, to extend the margin to 44-31 with 12:49 left.
Chestnut Hill scored seven of the next nine points to cut the Griffins' deficit to 46-38 before the Lightning used a 10-2 run to take a commanding 56-40 lead on a lay-up by senior forward
Akilah Sewell (Baltimore City College H.S./Baltimore, Md.) with 6:49 remaining in the second half.
From there, the Griffins outscored Goldey-Beacom by a 12-10 margin, but were unable to get any closer than 13 points the rest of the way.
Richardson, who was named as an honorable mention selection for the CACC weekly awards on Monday, made 7 of 12 shots from the floor and also converted 9 of 11 free throw attempts. She also added five assists and five steals for the Lightning, who were playing their third straight road game.
Senior forward
Lindsey Alexander (Lower Moreland H.S./Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) led the Griffins in a losing effort by scoring 15 points with five rebounds and two assists.
The Lightning outrebounded the Griffins by a 39-37 margin and forced Chestnut Hill into committing 17 turnovers.
The Lightning will return to the Joseph West Jones College Center on Friday, Dec. 28 when they host defending NCAA Division II champion Shaw University in a non-conference game at 2 p.m. Meanwhile, the Griffins will visit Mercy College on Saturday, Dec. 29 at 12:30 p.m.
