PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Sophomore center
Seamus Radtke (Father Judge H.S./Philadelphia, Pa.) scored a career-high 21 points and added 10 rebounds to lead Chestnut Hill College (5-6, 2-2) to its second win in the last three games, a 76-62 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Goldey-Beacom College (5-8, 2-3) at the Griffins' Sorgenti Arena on Wednesday afternoon.
Led by Radtke, the Griffins overcame a one-point deficit at the intermission to hand the Lightning their fourth loss in the last six games. In addition, it marked the third straight season the Griffins have defeated Goldey-Beacom at home.
The Lightning jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the opening three minutes of the first half before the Griffins came back and scored eight of the next nine points to claim a 10-8 advantage with 15:08 remaining in the stanza.
But, the Lightning answered by scoring 12 of the next 16 points, including six points from sophomore guard
Marcus Porter (Howard H.S./Wilmington, Del.), to take a 20-14 lead with 11:52 left in the period.
Led by six points from Radtke, the Griffins countered with a 13-6 spurt to take a 27-26 lead with 6:29 remaining on a pair of free throws by senior guard
Mark DiRugeris, Jr. (Woodbury H.S./Woodbury, N.J.).
After the Lightning regained the edge with five straight points, Chestnut Hill used a 7-0 spurt, including five points from DiRugeris, to take the lead at 34-31 with 4:27 left before the Lightning ended the half by scoring 8 of the last 12 points for a 39-38 edge at the intermission.
Sophomore guard
Charles Jackson (Brandywine H.S./Wilmington, Del.) gave Goldey-Beacom a 41-38 lead in the opening minute of the second half before the Griffins put together a 16-4 run to take a 54-45 advantage with just under 11 minutes left in regulation.
After a quick four-point spurt by Goldey-Beacom narrowed the gap to 54-49 with 9:14 left, the Griffins scored 12 of the next 18 points to extend the margin to 66-55 with 5:21 remaining.
From there, the Lightning were unable to get closer than 10 points as the Griffins held on for the victory.
Radtke, who posted the first 20-point game of his college career, made 10 of 16 shots from the floor while contributing a block and a steal. Meanwhile, DiRugeris posted his third consecutive 20-point effort with a game-high 25 points. He made 9 of 17 field goal attempts and four of five free throw attempts.
Senior guard
Francis Ashe (Eleanor Roosevelt H.S./Hyattsville, Md.) contributed his second “double double” of the season by setting season highs with 13 rebounds and 13 assists. He also scored four points and added four steals.
Porter, who earned honorable mention recognition for the CACC weekly awards on Monday, matched his season high by scoring 24 points in a losing effort for the Lightning while adding a team-high 10 rebounds. Meanwhile, junior guard
A.J. Picard (Souderton Area H.S./Skippack, Pa.) contributed 15 points with five rebounds and three assists.
The Lightning will be idle until Saturday, Jan. 5 when they visit Bloomfield College for a 3 p.m. game against the Deacons. Meanwhile, Chestnut Hill will travel to LIU Post on Saturday, Dec. 29 for a 3 p.m. non-conference game against the Pioneers.
