WILMINGTON, Del.
– Sophomore guard Marcus Porter (Howard H.S./Wilmington, Del.) made one of two free throws with 2.2 seconds remaining in regulation as Goldey-Beacom College (5-7) held off Washington Adventist University (3-11) to earn its third straight home win, a 70-69 non-conference victory over the Shock at the Lightning's Joseph West Jones College Center on Sunday afternoon.

With 2.9 seconds remaining, the Lightning gained possession after a missed lay-up by senior guard Harvey Todd (Seaside, Calif.). After Goldey-Beacom called a timeout, Porter was fouled by junior forward Lee Manley (Washington, D.C.) on the ensuing inbounds pass.

Porter, who finished the game with 15 points, missed the first free throw before making the second attempt to give Goldey-Beacom a 70-69 lead. On the ensuing play, Porter forced a turnover by junior Guiressi Grimes (Anaheim, Calif.) as time expired to give the Lightning the one-point victory.

Led by five points from sophomore guard Curtis Hopkins (Williamstown H.S./Williamstown, N.J.), the Lightning used a 17-8 run in the first 8:26 of the second half to build a 50-40 lead. But, the Shock answered by scoring 18 of the next 25 points to take a 58-57 lead on a pair of free throws by Todd with 5:11 remaining.

After sophomore guard Charles Jackson (Brandywine H.S./Wilmington, Del.) gave Goldey-Beacom a 59-58 advantage with a jumper with 4:58 left, Todd regained the Shock's lead to 61-59 when he converted a traditional three-point play on the ensuing possession.

A jumper by Porter tied the game at 61-61 with 4:06 remaining before Washington Adventist scored six straight points to take their largest lead of the game, a 67-61 advantage with 2:48 left.

But, the Lightning answered with a six-point run to tie the game at 67-67 with 1:32 remaining. After Hopkins made two free throws with 2:36 remaining, junior guard A.J. Picard (Souderton Area H.S./Skippack, Pa.) closed the margin to 67-65 with a lay-up with 2:12 left. With 1:32 remaining, Hopkins made a pair of free throws to even the score at 67-67.

With 1:20 left, sophomore guard Joshua Adeyeye (Fayetteville, N.C.) regained the Shock's two-point cushion when he converted a lay-up. However, Picard answered with 1:01 left with a lay-up to tie the game and set up Porter's game-winning free throws.

Led by six points from Adeyeye, the Shock jumped out to a 13-12 lead in the opening eight minutes of the first half. But, the Lightning put together a 14-2 run, including four points from Jackson, to build a 26-15 advantage with 7:59 remaining.

The Shock scored 14 of the next 16 points to regain a 29-28 edge before the Lightning scored five of the final eight points, including a three-point basket by Hopkins as time expired, to take a 33-32 advantage into the intermission.

Hopkins led the Lightning to the victory by setting career highs with 18 points and six rebounds. He made four of nine shots from the floor and also converted eight of nine free throws. Meanwhile, Jackson added 18 points with five rebounds, four assists and three steals while Porter added six rebounds to his 15-point effort.

Adeyeye scored a game-high 28 points in the loss for Washington Adventist, marking his third 20-point effort of the season. He made 12 of 24 shots from the floor and also added four rebounds.

The Lightning, who have won two of their last three games, will resume their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule on Wednesday, Dec. 19 when they visit Chestnut Hill for a 2 p.m. game. Meanwhile, Washington Adventist will travel to Wheeling Jesuit on Jan. 8.
