Updating the Lightning
Currently 4-7 overall and 2-2 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, the Lightning will be looking to rebound from a tough 65-63 loss against local rival Wilmington University on Monday night. The Lightning, who trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half, rallied to close the margin to 65-63, but a three-point attempt by sophomore guard Marcus Porter as time expired fell short. Porter, who is the Lightning's leading scorer with a 15.6 average, recorded his second straight “double double” with a season-high 24 points and 12 rebounds against the Wildcats on Monday night.
Scouting Washington Adventist
Currently 3-10 on the season, the Shock have lost four of their last five games after dropping a 72-59 decision against Elizabeth City State on Wednesday night at the Pitt. Senior guard Harvey Todd, III and junior forward Stephon Berry each scored 12 points while Berry contributed nine rebounds. Meanwhile, freshman forward Elliott Meredith posted a “double double” by scoring 11 points with 10 rebounds. Todd is the Shock's leading scorer with an 18.5 average while freshman guard Joshua Adeyeye is averaging 15.3 points per game along with a team-high 5.9 rebounds per outing.
A Look at Last Year's Meeting
Led by 27 points and 12 rebounds from Marcus Coleman, the Shock used a 53-point second half to pull away from the Lightning for an 88-66 victory at The Pitt. Coleman made 12 of 17 shots from the floor and also converted three of four free throw attempts as the Shock shot 59.3 per cent from the field in the victory. The Shock also received a “double double” from Jamie Newton, who had 17 points with a game-high 12 assists. The Lightning, who had a four-game win streak snapped, were led by A.J. Picard, who had 16 points while graduate student forward Rich Flemming added 11 points with a team-high 10 rebounds.
Seeing 20/20
For the first time this season, the Lightning had two players score at least 20 points in a game after sophomore guard Charles Jackson (22) and junior guard A.J. Picard (22) each reached the 20-point plateau in last Saturday's win over Caldwell. For Jackson, it marked his second 20-point game of the season while Picard has reached 20 or more points three times this year. In addition, Saturday's game marked the first time that the Lightning have had two players score at least 20 points in the same game since Picard (23) and sophomore guard Marcus Porter (20) accomplished the feat against Lincoln University last season.
Mister Assister
Since making his season debut in the Lightning's loss at Millersville on Dec. 5, freshman guard Gio Atkins has recorded a team-high 14 assists in three games. A starter in the last two contests, Atkins had a season-high six assists in the Lightning's win over Caldwell last Saturday and contributed four assists in each of the other two games. Atkins is averaging 2.7 points and 2.3 rebounds per game.
Points for Porter
After scoring a season-high 24 points in the Lightning's loss against Wilmington on Monday evening, sophomore guard Marcus Porter upped his team-high scoring average to 15.6 points per game. The ninth-leading scorer in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, Porter has scored at least 10 points in all 11 games this season. In addition, he has scored at least 10 points in 35 of 39 career games, including 11 games with at least 20 points. With 640 career points, the Wilmington, Del. native ranks 13th on the Lightning's all-time scoring list.
Block Party
Despite recording just one block in the Lightning's loss against Wilmington on Monday night, senior forward Lawrence Livingston is tied for the CACC lead with 27 blocks in 11 games this season. He ranks 13th in NCAA Division II by averaging 2.6 blocks per game through games of Dec. 9. Livingston, who is the lone senior on this year's team, ranks second in school history with 90 career blocks and needs nine blocks to become the Lightning's all-time leader.
