NEWARK, Del. – Senior forward Brandon Fox (Deptford H.S./Deptford, N.J.) made 7 of 13 shots from the floor and scored a team-high 19 points as Wilmington University (2-8, 2-3) held off a late rally by Goldey-Beacom College (4-7, 2-2) to earn its second win in the last three games, a 65-63 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over the Lightning at the Wilmington University Athletics Complex on Monday evening.

With the victory, the Wildcats snapped a six-game losing streak against the Lightning while handing Goldey-Beacom its third loss in the last four games.

Led by four points from senior guard Isiah Mason (Cardinal Dougherty H.S./Philadelphia, Pa.), the Wildcats jumped out to an 11-5 lead in the first six minutes of the game. But, the Lightning narrowed the margin to 13-11 by scoring six of the next points, including three-point field goals from sophomore guard Curtis Hopkins (Williamstown H.S./Williamstown, N.J.) and junior guard A.J. Picard (Souderton Area H.S./Skippack, Pa.).

After the teams traded a pair of field goals, the Wildcats extended their advantage to 29-21 by scoring 11 of the next 17 points, including a pair of field goals from junior guard Herbert Dennis (North Caroline H.S./Ridgely, Md.).

The Lightning trimmed the deficit to 29-23 on a pair of free throws by sophomore Marcus Porter (Howard H.S./Wilmington, Del.) before Wilmington used a 9-4 spurt over the final five minutes to take a 38-27 lead into the intermission.

Led by 10 points from Porter, the Lightning opened the second half by scoring 20 of the first 31 points to narrow the margin to 49-47 with 13:07 remaining before the Wildcats scored six of the next eight points to extend their lead to 55-49 on a Mason three-point field goal with 10:12 left in regulation.

But, the Lightning answered by going on a 12-6 spurt, including six made free throws, to tie the game at 61-61 with 3:15 left on a pair of free throws by junior forward Jordan Thorpe (Mount Zion Christian Academy/Newburgh, N.Y.).

With 2:49 remaining, a jumper by senior guard James Pee (William Penn H.S./Newark, Del.) gave Wilmington a 63-61 advantage before Porter answered with a jumper to even the score at 63-63 with 39 seconds left.

The Wildcats regained the edge with 4.8 seconds remaining when Dennis put in a rebound of a missed shot.

On the ensuing possession, the Lightning had a chance to win the game after taking two timeouts, but a three-point attempt from the top of the arc by Porter fell short as the Wildcats held on for the victory.

While Fox led the Wildcats to the victory, Mason contributed 13 points off the bench by making six of seven field goal attempts. He also added three rebounds and three assists. Meanwhile, Pee made 6 of 13 shots from the floor en route to a 13-point performance.

Porter led the Lightning in a losing effort by earning his second straight “double double” with a season-high 24 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Meanwhile, Picard added 15 points with five rebounds while Hopkins contributed 10 points off the bench.

The Lightning will return home on Sunday, Dec. 16 to host Washington Adventist University in a non-conference game at the Joseph West Jones College Center at 1 p.m. Meanwhile, Wilmington will continue its four-game homestand on Saturday afternoon by facing Lincoln University at 3 p.m.
