Opening Tip-Off
After splitting a pair of games at the Nova Southeastern University Thanksgiving Classic last weekend, the Lightning will continue their five-game road trip on Wednesday night by facing Mercy College in a non-conference game at the Mercy Gymnasium. Opening tip-off between the Lightning and the Mavericks is slated for 7:30 p.m. and live video will be available by visiting Mercy's official athletics website, www.mercyathletics.com.
Updating the Lightning
Now 2-4 overall and 1-0 in the CACC, the Lightning have won two of three games after starting the season with an 0-3 record. Following their 56-55 victory over the University of the Sciences on Tuesday evening, the Lightning dropped a tough 87-85 decision against Nova Southeastern on Friday evening in the Sharks' Thanksgiving Classic before erupting for a season-high 110 points in a victory over the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaquez on Saturday evening. Sophomore guard Charles Jackson was named to the all-tournament team at the Nova Southeastern Thanksgiving Classic after averaging 19.5 points per game and shooting 60.0 per cent from the field.
Scouting Mercy
Currently 0-4 on the season, the Mavericks will be trying to earn their first win of the season when they host Goldey-Beacom on Wednesday evening. The Mavericks, who are in the middle of a four-game homestand, will be playing against a CACC opponent for the third consecutive game after a 67-64 loss against Nyack on Nov. 17. Senior guard Joseph Pope is the Mavericks' leading scorer with a 17.0 average while junior guard Remi Mignott has contributed 10.8 points per game.
Lightning Hit Century Mark Against Puerto Rico-Mayaquez
Led by six players who scored in double figures, the Lightning erupted for a season-high 110 points in their victory over the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaquez on Saturday night in the consolation game of the Nova Southeastern University Thanksgiving Classic. It marked the Lightning's highest single-game point total since tallying 110 points against Penn State-Abington on Nov. 22, 2008 at the Jones Center. In addition, the 110 points were the most scored by a team in the CACC since Bloomfield tallied 116 points in a win over Concordia on Feb. 9, 2011.
Jackson Named to Thanksgiving Classic All-Tournament Team
After leading the Lightning to a split of their two games last weekend, sophomore guard Charles Jackson was named as the Lightning's representative on the Nova Southeastern University Thanksgiving Classic All-Tournament Team. Jackson, who averaged 19.5 points per game in the two contests, scored a career-high 24 points in the Lightning's 110-68 win over the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaquez on Saturday night after a 15-point performance against the host Sharks on Friday evening in an 87-85 setback. The Lightning's third-leading scorer with a 10.5 average, Jackson has averaged 16.0 points per game in his last three contests while shooting 55.9 per cent from the field.
Making Them Count
Junior guard A.J. Picard has been one of the Lightning's leaders at the free throw line during his three-year career. In six regular season games this year, he has converted 24 of 25 free throw attempts and ranks second in the CACC with a .960 free throw percentage. In addition, he also made all eight of his free throw attempts at Towson on Nov. 12 in an exhibition game. Over his last 12 games (excluding the Towson exhibition), the Skippack, Pa. native has made 48 of his last 51 free throw attempts (.941).
Picard and Porter to Serve as 2012-13 Captains
Junior guard A.J. Picard and sophomore guard Marcus Porter will serve as the Lightning's captains during the 2012-13 season, it has been announced by Coach Chuck Hammond. Picard was an honorable mention All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference pick last year after averaging 13.7 points per game while leading the team with an .801 free throw percentage. Meanwhile, Porter earned second team All-CACC notice as a freshman after leading the Lightning with a 16.7 scoring average last year. He also averaged 6.1 rebounds per game and ranked second on the team with 50 assists.
What's Ahead for Goldey-Beacom
The Lightning will resume their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule on Friday, Nov. 30 when they travel to Concordia for a 7 p.m. match-up against the Clippers. After traveling to Millersville for a non-conference game on Wednesday, Dec. 5, the Lightning will return home on Saturday, Dec. 8 to face Caldwell in the second game of a CACC basketball doubleheader at approximately 3 p.m.
