WILMINGTON, Del. – Junior guard
Keith Thomas (Gwynn Park H.S./Lanham, Md.) hit the eventual game-winning
three-point field goal with 2:43 remaining in the second half to lead Goldey-Beacom College (1-3, 1-0) to its first win of the season, a 56-55 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over the University of the Sciences (1-5, 0-2) at the Lightning's Joseph West Jones College Center on Tuesday evening.
The win snapped the Lightning's three-game losing streak while handing the Devils their second straight loss.
After battling to tie the game at 49-49 with 6:02 remaining in regulation, the Lightning scored 7 of the final 13 points to earn the victory. Senior forward
Lawrence Livingston (Caesar Rodney H.S./Dover, Del.) gave Goldey-Beacom a 50-49 lead when he converted a free throw before sophomore guard
Marcus Porter (Howard H.S./Wilmington, Del.) upped the advantage to 52-49 with a jumper with 5:32 remaining.
Porter hit one of two free throws to extend the lead to 53-49 with 4:30 left before junior guard
William Kernan (The Lawrenceville School/Medford, N.J.) answered with a lay-up with 4:07 remaining to cut the Devils' deficit to 53-51.
Junior guard
Tyrone Mann-Barnes (Collingswood H.S./Woodlynne, N.J.) tied the game with a lay-up with 3:24 left before Thomas gave the Lightning a three-point lead with his third three-point field goal of the game from the top of the arc.
Kernan scored on a lay-up with 16 seconds left to cut the margin to 56-55. After sophomore guard
Curtis Hopkins (Williamstown H.S./Williamstown, N.J.) missed a free throw with 15 seconds remaining, the Devils got the rebound. Senior guard
Alec McClure (Wissahickon H.S./Blue Bell, Pa.) missed a pair of chances in the closing seconds as the Lightning held on for the victory.
Led by seven points from Porter, the Lightning jumped out to a 12-9 lead in the first nine minutes of the opening stanza. But, the Devils answered by scoring the next eight points to lead by a 17-12 margin with 6:23 remaining in the period.
Freshman guard
Akil Charles (Eleanor Roosevelt H.S./Glendale, Md.) scored five points to lead the Lightning on a 7-4 run to end the first half, giving the Devils a 21-19 lead at the intermission.
Livingston opened the second half by scoring the first four points to give Goldey-Beacom a 23-21 edge with 18:35 remaining in regulation before the Devils answered with an 8-2 spurt to take a 29-25 lead on a three-point field goal from senior
Henry Messinger (Dallas Area H.S./Trucksville, Pa.).
The teams battled back and forth before the Lightning used an 8-3 spurt to take a 48-44 advantage on a jumper from junior forward
Jordan Thorpe (Mount Zion Christian Academy/Newburgh, N.Y.) with 8:50 remaining.
Led by three points from junior
Patrick Connaghan (Chestnut Hill Academy/Warrington, Pa.), the Devils used five consecutive points to claim a 49-48 edge with 6:50 remaining, setting up the Lightning's game-ending run.
Porter led the Lightning with a team-high 12 points while grabbing seven rebounds. Meanwhile, Livingston scored a season-high 10 points by making all three of his field goal attempts and all four of his free throws. He also contributed five rebounds with a career-high six blocked shots.
One of four USciences players to score in double figures, Messinger tallied a game-high 17 points while making 7 of 13 field goal attempts in addition to grabbing four rebounds. Sophomore forward
Garret Kerr (Middle Township H.S./Moorestown, N.J.) added 14 points with a game-high 10 rebounds to earn his 24th “double double” in the last 26 games.
Connaghan also contributed a “double double” with 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Devils, who were playing their third game in four days.
The Lightning will begin a five-game road trip on Friday night when they face Nova Southeastern in the Sharks' Thanksgiving Tournament at 5:30 p.m.
