WILMINGTON, Del. – Sophomore forward
Tyler McFarland (Camden Hills H.S./Rockport, Maine) scored 13 points and added 12 rebounds as Bentley University (2-2) snapped a two-game losing streak with a 66-43 non-conference victory over Goldey-Beacom College (0-3) at the Lightning's Joseph West Jones College Center on Saturday afternoon.
Led by seven points from sophomore guard
JP Koury (Christian Brothers Academy/Red Bank, N.J.), the Falcons jumped out to a 16-5 lead in the opening 10 minutes of the first half.
After the Lightning closed the margin to 20-10 on a free throw from junior forward
Will Williams (Eldon Academy/Flushing, N.Y.), the Falcons ended the first half by scoring 14 of the final 18 points to take a commanding 34-14 advantage into the intermission.
The Lightning opened the second half by scoring 7 of the first 11 points to narrow the deficit to 38-21 with 13:41 remaining on a free throw by sophomore guard
Marcus Porter (Howard H.S./Wilmington, Del.) before the Falcons put together an 11-4 run to extend the advantage to 49-25 with 7:15 remaining.
Despite outscoring the Falcons by an 18-17 margin over the final seven minutes, the Lightning were unable to complete the comeback.
In leading the Falcons to the victory, McFarland made 6 of 12 shots from the floor along with a free throw attempt. Meanwhile, Koury added 13 points by making 4 of 13 field goal attempts while adding five rebounds and four steals.
Junior guard
Jasper Grassa (Lynn Classical H.S./Lynn, Mass.) contributed 13 points with four rebounds and three assists while freshman guard
Alex Furness (Wells H.S./Wells, Maine) added 12 points with four rebounds.
Porter scored a game-high 14 points to lead the Lightning in a losing effort. He made 5 of 19 shots from the floor and added six rebounds. Junior forward
Jordan Thorpe (Mount Zion Christian Academy/Newburgh, N.Y.) added a season-high eight rebounds while contributing six points.
The Lightning will finish their quick two-game homestand on Tuesday evening when they host the University of the Sciences in their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener at the Jones Center at 8 p.m. Meanwhile, Bentley will host Merrimack on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.
