TOWSON, Md. – Led by 16 points from junior guard
Mike Burwell (South Kent Prep/East Brunswick, N.J.), the Towson University men's basketball team sprinted out to a 21-point lead in the first half before holding off a second half rally by Goldey-Beacom College to hand the Lightning a 72-64 loss in an exhibition game at the Towson Center on Monday evening.
The Tigers, who dropped their regular season opener against the College of Charleston on Friday night, earned their second exhibition victory of the season after defeating Bloomsburg on Nov. 1.
Led by four points from Burwell, the Tigers scored the game's first 10 points in a span of 3:27 before the Lightning answered with five straight points from junior guard
A.J. Picard (Souderton Area H.S./Skippack, Pa.) to trim the margin to 10-5 with 15:12 left in the opening stanza.
However, the Tigers exploded on a 17-5 spurt over the next 10 minutes to take a commanding 27-10 advantage on a lay-up by sophomore guard

Curtis Hopkins (Williamstown H.S./Williamstown, N.J.) ended the run with 4:58 remaining in the first half, Towson scored 7 of the final 12 points to take a 34-17 lead into the intermission.
Sparked by eight points from junior guard
Keith Thomas (Gwynn Park H.S./Lanham, Md.), the Lightning opened the second half by scoring 14 of the first 19 points to close the margin to 39-32 with 14:33 remaining in regulation.
After the Tigers extended the advantage to 47-36 with 12:07 left, the Lightning used a 17-6 rally over the next six minutes to even the score at 53-53. Junior forward
Jordan Thorpe (Mount Zion Christian Academy/Newburgh, N.Y.) scored six of his points during the run for the Lightning.
But, the Tigers answered by scoring six straight points for a 59-53 advantage with 4:57 remaining on a three-point field goal by freshman
Jerome Hairston (Christ School/Cheyenne, Wyoming).
The Lightning trimmed the deficit to 59-56 with 4:23 after Picard converted three free throws, but were unable to get any closer as Towson ended the game with a 13-8 spurt.
One of four Towson players in double figures, Burwell made seven of nine shots from the floor and also contributed a team-high six rebounds and three assists. Meanwhile, Hairston added 15 points after making five of seven field goal attempts along with two of four free throws.
Picard made four of eight field goal attempts along with all eight of his free throws en route to a game-high 17 points along with two rebounds, two assists and two steals. Thomas added 16 points by making 5 of 10 field goal attempts while Thorpe tallied 15 points with four rebounds.
The Lightning will resume their regular season schedule on Saturday afternoon when they host Bentley University at the Joseph West Jones College Center for a 1 p.m. non-conference game.
Meanwhile, the Tigers will return to their regular season schedule by competing in the Comfort Suites Invitational this weekend.
