Coming off a 70-63 victory against the University of the District of Columbia on Saturday afternoon, the Lightning are off to a 2-0 start for the first time since the 2001-02 season when they won their first three games. The Lightning also claimed a 58-51 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas in the season opener on Friday evening.
Senior guard
Devonne Richardson (Milford Mill Academy/Baltimore, Md.) led the Lightning to the wins over UDC and St. Thomas Aquinas. After posting a "double double" with 17 points and 13 rebounds in the season opener on Friday, Richardson contributed 17 points with 9 rebounds against UDC on Saturday.
With her performance in the East Coast Conference/Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Challenge, Richardson needs just two points to become the seventh player in school history to score 1,000 career points. She also became the second player in school history to make 300 or more career free throws when she made 9 of 12 attempts against UDC on Saturday afternoon.
In addition to leading the Lightning with a 17.0 scoring average, Richardson is also the team's leader with 22 rebounds in two games. Meanwhile, senior forward
Irene Hudson (Corcoran H.S./Syracuse, N.Y.) is averaging 13.0 points per game while making 55.0 per cent of her field goal attempts.
Opening their season against the Lightning on Monday night, the Bears are coming off an 8-20 season last year that included a 6-16 record in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. However, Kutztown won two of its final four games, including a 66-61 victory over Shippensburg in the season finale.
Senior guard
Ashley Wood (Spring-Ford H.S./Limerick, Pa.) is the Bears' leading returning scorer after averaging 13.4 points per game last season. She scored a season-high 33 points in the season opener against Shepherd and tallied at least 10 points in 18 of 28 games.
The Lightning will look to defeat the Bears for the second straight season after posting a 66-55 victory in last year's meeting at the Joseph West Jones College Center. Senior forward
Akilah Sewell (Baltimore City College H.S./Baltimore, Md.) led Goldey-Beacom with 23 points and 17 rebounds while Richardson tallied 11 points with 7 rebounds.
After Monday night's game, the Lightning will be idle until Friday night when they play at Stonehill College in the Stonehill Tip-Off Classic.
