SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Lightning outshot the Firebirds 7-4 in the second half, but could not score the equalizer as the Goldey-Beacom College men's soccer team dropped its season opener, 1-0 against the University of the District of Columbia in first-round action of the Shippensburg University Tournament.

Senior Rob Cann took a team-high four shots and freshman Juan Perez took three for the Lightning, but UDC's goalkeeper Kyle Heatherington was up to the task, making four saves to preserve the shutout. Junior Ignacio Farias played the full 90 minutes in goal for GBC and made three stops while allowing one goal. Backs Carlos Bastardo, Chris Brake and Connor Mathis played outstanding defensively to keep the Lightning within striking distance all game.

UDC's Robel Davis scored what proved to be the game-winner off an assist from Mario Benegas in the 41st minute. The Firebirds (1-0) held a 17-11 shot advantage for the game and took five corner kicks to the Lightning's two.

The Lightning (0-1) will look to bounce back on Sunday evening at 5:30 p.m. when they play the host, Shippensburg. The Red Raiders (0-1) suffered a 1-0 defeat against Felician in their season opener on Fri. night.
