Two Late Goals Push Griffins Past GBC Men's Soccer

PIKE CREEK, Del. - The Goldey-Beacom College men's soccer team dropped its fifth straight game to start the 2011 season as the Lightning fell to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe Chestnut Hill, 3-1 on Thurs. afternoon at Nancy Churchman-Sawin Field.

Sophomore midfielder Andre Jank scored for the second consecutive game almost five minutes into the second half to even the score at 1-1, but the Lightning surrendered two late unanswered goals within a four-minute span and fell by the final verdict of 3-1.

The Griffins (4-4-1, 3-2 CACC) were led by Gavin Reid, who assisted on Brooks Mirabella's go-ahead goal in the 78th minute and scored a penalty kick goal in the 82nd minute. Mark Pugliese scored the first goal of the game in the 44th minute on a direct kick from about 20 yards out.

Chestnut Hill held a 20-14 shot advantage and 7-5 corner kick advantage. Griffin goalkeeper Mike Goldstein made five saves and allowed just one goal in 90 minutes of work.

GBC junior goalkeeper Ignacio Farias made six saves and allowed three goals in a full 90-minute effort. Senior forward Kwame Appiah led the Lightning with three shots.

Next up for the Lightning is another home game against Dominican College on Sat., Oct. 1 at 1 p.m.
