Boxscore

CALDWELL, N.J. - The Goldey-Beacom College men's soccer team was defeated 5-2 at Caldwell College in its season finale on Friday afternoon. The Lightning had pulled within 3-2 after an unassisted goal by sophomore Andre Jank, but Caldwell responded with two goals, the last of which came with one second remaining in regulation.

The Cougars held a 27-21 shot advantage and doubled the Lightning up in corner kicks, 6-3. Junior goalkeeper Ignacio Farias played nearly 80 minutes in goal and made four saves. Sophomore Carlos Meinhard finished the game and made five saves in a frantic final 10 minutes.

Ken Thatcher Howell and Jank led GBC offensively with seven and six shots, respectively. Howell put four of his shots on goal and tallied his first goal of the season and the Lightning's first goal of the day. Jank's goal was his team-leading fourth of the season and came in the 81st minute.

After 15 minutes of scoreless action, Donald Kafer put Caldwell up 1-0 as he fired a shot past Farias from 15 yards out. Kristopher Blistre was credited with the assist. Facundo Zalazar made it 2-0 Cougars as he collected a pass from Yousef Elhusseini and struck from 10 yards out for the goal. Caldwell would take that 2-0 lead into the intermission.

Nearly 30 minutes went by after Zalazar's goal, but about nine minutes into the second half, Howell scored on a penalty kick to put the Lightning on the board. But Elhusseini took a pass from Mosiah White and scored from 15 yards out to put Caldwell back up by two goals in the 76th minute.

The Lightning, who took 12 of their 21 shots in the second half, struck once more. Jank stole the ball from Caldwell goalkeeper Brian Agostini and put it in to put the Lightning within striking distance with just under 10 minutes left to play.

Unfortunately for GBC, Zalazar registered his second goal of the day as he headed in a corner kick from Tim Centineo to put the Cougars up 4-2. White added a goal with just one tick left on the clock for good measure, and Caldwell claimed the5-2 victory.

This game concludes the 2011 season for the Lightning.
