BLOOMFIELD, N.J. – Senior guard Janae Weldon and sophomore forward Irene Hudson scored 10 points apiece, but the Goldey-Beacom College women's basketball team could not overcome an 11-0 start by host, Bloomfield College as the Lightning suffered a 64-47 loss at Bloomfield Gym on Sat. afternoon.
The Lightning fell to 9-9 overall and 7-4 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference with the loss, but remain a game ahead of Philadelphia U. for third place in the South Division standings. Meanwhile, Bloomfield improved to 12-5 overall and a perfect 10-0 in league play as the Lady Deacons stay atop the North Division standings.
Bloomfield jumped out to 11-0 and 17-3 leads, and although the Lightning twice pulled within striking distance, they never could come all the way back to erase their slow start.
First GBC went on an 8-0 run to get within 23-17, but the Lady Deacons ended the frame on a 10-2 burst and led 33-19 at halftime.
Still, the Lightning showed their resolve by pulling within 34-28 at the 16:15 mark on a fast-break layup by redshirt-sophomore guard Ashley Rosario following a steal and assist by Weldon.
But again Bloomfield had the answer, this time going on a 15-4 spell to claim a 49-34 lead with 8:22 left to play. The Lady Deacons' lead stayed in double-digits the rest of the way.
Bloomfield held a 39-percent to 34-percent shooting edge, won the rebounding battle 40-34 and shot 17-of-23 at the line compared to 13-of-24 for GBC. The Lady Deacons also shot better from long-range (5-of-12 to only 2-of-13).
With this loss, GBC is now 0-3 against CACC North Division teams. The Lightning are, however, 7-1 within their own division, the South. They take on a South Division foe next in University of the Sciences in Philadelphia on the road Thurs. night at 6 p.m.
