PHILADELPHIA – First-place Goldey-Beacom College was stunned by last-place Holy Family, 62-51 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division men's basketball upset at the Campus Center Thurs. night.
The loss drops GBC to 9-7 overall and 5-2 in the CACC while HFU improved to 4-12 overall and 2-4 in league play.
The Lightning were led by senior forward Terrence Parkes's fourth consecutive double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds and 13 points by senior guard Darnell Cephas.
Holy Family's Alberto Munoz scored a game-high 22 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the field to lead the Tigers offensively. Munoz knocked down six three-pointers (6-of-10 for the night) and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds to record a double-double. Tim Smith also flirted with a triple-double as he registered 18 points, 10 rebounds and a game-high eight assists.
The first half featured four ties and three lead changes in the early-going, but with the game tied 11-11 at the 11:38 mark, the Tigers closed out the half on a 19-9 run to take a 30-20 lead into the intermission.
GBC was outshot 36-percent to 21-percent in the first half (39-percent to 31-percent for the game) and doubled up 12-6 in points in the paint.
Munoz opened the scoring in the second period with his second of six three-pointers on the night nearly 30 seconds into the action to widen the gap to 13 (33-20). However, an 8-0 Lightning run capped by two consecutive jumpers by Parkes helped GBC pull within five (33-28) at the 16:30 mark.
That would be as close as GBC would get, as another Munoz three-pointer gave Holy Family a 43-32 lead with 12:21 remaining in regulation, and the Lightning could never get the lead back down to double-digits the rest of the way.
The Lightning remain in first-place in the CACC South Division and will next take on crosstown rival Wilmington University on the road Wed. at 8 p.m.
