NEW CASTLE, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College volleyball team was swept, 3-0 by crosstown rival Wilmington University in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference volleyball action on Thurs. evening at the Pratt Gymnasium. Wilmington took the first set by a score of 25-12, won set two 25-22, and completed the sweep with a 25-19 victory in the third set.
With the loss, the Lightning fell to 0-4 in the conference and 3-6 on the season while Wilmington improved to 3-1 in the CACC and 7-6 overall.
Goldey-Beacom was paced by freshman outside hitter Tyla Wells' eight kills. Wells leads the team with 63 kills on the season.
Junior Roni Shaner was back in her regular outside hitter position after filling in at setter the past three matches, and she added a team-high nine kills and 11 digs. Sophomore setter Monica Dempsey returned from a head injury that sidelined her for three matches and she chipped in with 17 assists and 13 digs.
Senior defensive specialist A.J. Hicks tied Dempsey with a team-high 13 digs. Hicks leads the team with 78 for the season.
Freshman middle hitter Katie Shorter led the way for the Wildcats, as she posted 10 kills and seven blocks. Sophomore Nicole Wiechecki added six kills, while freshman Brittany Biddle had five kills. Senior setter Christina Lessard had 16 assists.
