PHILADELPHIA – The Goldey-Beacom College volleyball team lost to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, 3-0 on the road Tues. night, but not before scoring 23, 23 and 21 points, respectively in three highly-contested sets.
The Lightning (3-5, 0-3 CACC) were again without the services of their team co-captain and star setter Monica Dempsey. Junior Roni Shaner was again pulled away from her regular outside hitting duties and forced to play setter where she directed the Lightning with 18 assists and one service ace.
Freshman Tyla Wells and junior Rebecca Stoffer led the Lightning with seven kills apiece, with Stoffer hitting an impressive .400 percent (seven kills, one error, 15 attempts). Coming into the match, Stoffer ranked No. 3 in the conference in hitting percentage at .293.
Senior co-captain A.J. Hicks led GBC defensively with 11 digs, with Wells pitching in with eight and sophomore Renee DeLeo recording seven. Hicks also led the Lightning with three service aces.
USP (3-3, 1-2 CACC) was led by Christine Puschak (14 kills), Cady Rich (11 kills) and Sarah Hickman (31 assists). The Devils featured three players with double-figure digs in Stacey Wooden (16), Coral Holly (11) and Diana Solomon (10).
The Devils hit .221 as a team to the Lightning's .107 and had more than double their kills (52 to 25). Still, the Lightning twice nearly forced extra play, losing the first two sets 25-23 and the last set 25-21.
GBC will now play the second of three straight road contests on Thurs. night when they take on cross-town rival Wilmington University in a CACC South Division clash beginning at 7 p.m.
