PIKE CREEK, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College volleyball team staged a furious comeback after falling down in the match 2-0 to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe Georgian Court, but the Lightning came up short in the fourth set and lost the match, 3-1 on Fri. night at the Jones Center.
The Lightning (7-18, 1-15 CACC) fell behind 2-0 when they lost the first two sets 25-18 and 25-19, respectively, then they won the third set 25-18, only to fall in extra-play in the fourth set, 27-25.
Junior outside hitter Roni Shaner led the offensive charge with eight kills and nine assists. Sophomore setter Monica Dempsey, who returned after missing last match with a torn ligament in her arm, added six kills to go with a double-double in assists (14) and digs (14).
Both middle hitters, junior Rebecca Stoffer and sophomore Catherine Howard were both effective as Stoffer blasted five kills and had two blocks (one solo) and Howard had two kills and five blocks (four solo). Defensively, senior defensive specialist A.J. Hicks added eight digs.
GBC had no answer for Georgian Court's Stephanie Rivera, as the 5-8 senior middle hitter for the Lions dominated with 20 kills on 37 swings (.432 hitting percentage). Also, Brandi Arsenault added 11 kills on 22 attack attempts and Amy Berry had a match-high 26 assists.
The four-time reigning CACC champion Lions improved to 12-15 overall and 11-5 in league play with the win.
