EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Goldey-Beacom College men's cross country team ran in a tight pack as it placed 6th of 10 teams in its final tune-up before the conference championship meet on Sat. at the Nevins Invitational, hosted by East Stroudsburg University.
Just one minute and 13 seconds separated the Lightning's No. 1-5 runners as they finished with a team score of 178 and a total time of 1:25:55 (17:11 avg./runner). Each of the five runners improved on their 5K time from the only other 5K event GBC ran this season back on Sept. 11 in the first meet of the season.
Freshman Stewart Reich paced the Lightning with a 16:31 finish for 33rd place overall. Reich, who hit the mile mark at 5:00 and the 2-mile mark at 10:30, improved his 5K time by 44 seconds.
Junior Ben Kinley followed in second for the Lightning, 22 seconds later at 16:53 to finish 44th. Kinley, who hit the 2-mile mark at 10:36, took 1:12 off his first 5K time of the season.
Only 21 seconds after Kinley (43 seconds after Reich), freshman Hugo Morales came in at third for GBC with a time of 17:14 to take 55th. Sophomore David Zartler, still only 1:01 after Reich, came in at 17:32 to place 60th as the Lightning's fourth finisher. Morales took 1:07 off his 5K time and Zartler took off 1:00.
Junior Paul Graybeal rounded out the Lightning finishers a mere 12 seconds behind Zartler (17:44) as he took a team-best 1:14 off his 5K time to place 65th overall.
GBC has two weeks before it travels to Philadelphia on Nov. 7 for the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championships. The Lightning will look to better its 9th place finish out of 10 teams a year ago.
