PIKE CREEK, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College volleyball team lost to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe University of the Sciences in Philadelphia in straight sets (3-0) on Tues. night at the Joseph West Jones Center.
The Lightning (6-15, 1-12 CACC) lost 25-21, 25-13 and 25-16 as USciences improved to 6-11 overall and 4-9 in the conference.
Sophomore Monica Dempsey (7 kills, 11 assists, 6 digs) and junior Roni Shaner (3 kills, 10 assists, 11 digs) led GBC in the losing effort.
The Devils out-hit the Lightning .378 to .054 for the night and had 38 kills to GBC's 23. They were led by the one-two punch of setter Sarah Hickman (32 assists) and Christine Puschak (12 kills, zero errors, .571 hitting percentage). Hickman went over 2,000 assists for her career with her performance tonight.
GBC played well in spurts, playing a very competitive first set before conceding a 25-21 victory to USP. Junior outside hitter Amanda Mills stepped up with two kills, as did Dempsey, Shaner and sophomore Renee DeLeo. Puschak led the way for USciences with four kills, while Cady Rich (8 kills) tallied three.
The second set saw the Lightning tied with USciences, 10-10 early on, but they let the game slip away as the Devils closed out the set with a 15-3 run. GBC struggled offensively as they hit -.14 for the set (4k 7e 21 ta) and fell behind 2-0 in the match with a 25-13 loss. USciences' Lauren Mobley had four of her six kills to lead the Devils.
Dempsey and freshman Tyla Wells had four and three kills, respectively in the third set, but GBC could only manage 16 points as they dropped the third set and the match. Puschak took the match over with six of the team's 13 kills during the set.
Next up for GBC is Dig Pink Night on Thurs. at 7 p.m. in the Joseph West Jones Center. The Lightning will host non-conference opponent Bowie State.
