PHILADELPHIA - The Goldey-Beacom College men's basketball team bounced back after a crushing loss to Kutztown with a dominant performance on the road at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. The Lightning won 79-56 and stayed perfect (4-0) in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play while improving to 9-3 on the season.
Junior forward Terrence Parkes erupted for 23 points (4-for-6 from three-point range), six rebounds, three assists and a season-high seven steals, while senior guard Kyle White tallied 20 points, five boards and six assists and junior guard Sam McDuffie scored a dozen points on perfect 4-for-4 shooting from three-point land as the Lightning made a late surge and cruised past the Devils for their third straight win against USP dating back to last season.
A streaky game at the outset, USP scored the first seven points of the night before the Lightning struck for the next 18. GBC would take a 32-25 lead into the intermission.
The Devils put the first five points on the board when play resumed, drawing within 32-30 on a three-pointer by Myer Messinger (17 points). Moments later, GBC led 36-32 when the Lightning pulled away on the strength of a 22-9 outburst. Junior point guard Azeez Ellegood (11 points, six assists) capped the run with a layup, and the Lightning never let the lead dip below 15 thereafter.
Adewale Adefemi (14 points, eight rebounds) led the way offensively for the Devils, but GBC's defense frustrated USP all night, causing 19 turnovers compared to the Lightning's nine. GBC converted those 19 turnovers into 23 points on the night.
The Lightning held a slight edge in rebounding (28-26), and while both teams shot very well from the field (GBC - 52 percent, USP – 48 percent), GBC bolstered its offense with sizzling three-point accuracy (14-of-25).
On top of the CACC South Division, the Lightning look to stay unbeaten in conference play as they host CACC newcomer, Concordia (N.Y.) at 3 p.m. on Sat., Jan. 9.
