PIKE CREEK, Del. - The Goldey-Beacom College men's basketball team shot 49.3 percent from the field and 95 percent from the foul line en-route to its highest scoring output of the season as the Lightning dominated CACC South Division foe Holy Family University, 93-67 Thurs. night at the Joseph West Jones Center.
With the win, the Lightning completed the season sweep of HFU and improved to 13-4 overall and 7-1 in conference play, while Holy Family fell to 0-17 and 0-8 in the CACC.
Senior guard Kyle White, who came into the game ranked No. 3 in the CACC with 21.5 ppg, led all five GBC starters in double-figures with 20 points - his 12th game of 20 or more points this season. Junior guard Sam McDuffie tallied his ninth straight double-figure scoring game with 18 points, junior forward Terrence Parkes posted his eighth double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds, junior point guard Azeez Ellegood pitched in 13 points and senior forward Troy Esquilin recorded 12 points and six rebounds.
GBC, which came into the game with an 11-1 record when outrebounding its opponent, held a 42-23 advantage on the glass and outscored the Tigers 44-26 in the paint. The Lightning scored 18 second chance points and allowed just four by HFU. They also took advantage of 21 Tiger turnovers and turned them into 28 points.
Justin Swidowski, who came into the game one spot ahead of White at No. 2 in the CACC with 23.6 ppg, scored a game-high 23 points on 10-for-15 from the field and 3-for-4 from the free-throw line. Khiry Hankins also pitched in with 21 points, including a game-high five three-point field goals.
The Lightning started the game on a 6-0 surge and never looked back. They would open up leads of 12-2, 19-4 and 22-6 early on before taking their biggest lead of the half, 45-16 with 4:11 left before intermission. HFU would close out the half on a 12-4 run, but the Lightning still took a 49-28 advantage into the break.
Parkes and McDuffie led the Lightning with 14 and 10 points, respectively in the first stanza. GBC shot a scorching 18-for-36 (50 percent) from the field, 5-for-7 (71.4 percent) from three-point range, and a perfect 8-for-8 from the foul line.
White took over in the second half with 14 points on 6-of-9 from the field and 2-of-2 from the line in 13 minutes of work. GBC never allowed the Tigers to get within 20 in the second half, going up by as many as 30 (73-43) at the 10:28 mark before head coach Chuck Hammond cleared his bench. This enabled freshman forward Lawrence Livingston to get to the foul line late in the game and convert both his free-throws for the first two points of his young career at GBC.
The Lightning went on to win the game by a final score of 93-67, its largest margin of victory (26) thus far this season. Their 93-point total was the most by a GBC team since a 115-72 win over Columbia Union College (now Washington Adventist University) on Dec. 13, 2007.
GBC is back in action on Sat. for the battle of CACC No. 1's. The Lightning, No. 1 in the South Division, will take on the North Division's No. 1 team, Bloomfield College on Sat. at 3 p.m. in the Joseph West Jones Center.
