CALDWELL, N.J. – Senior guard Kyle White's 21-point performance lifted him up to No. 4 on the school's all-time career scoring list with 799 points, but it was not nearly enough as the Goldey-Beacom College men's basketball team suffered its first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss of the season at Caldwell College, 93-76 on Sat. night.
The Lightning (12-4, 6-1 CACC), which had won 10 of their last 11 games including the last four, saw their perfect CACC record tarnished by a Caldwell team that had lost its last four games and improved to a mere 3-13 overall record and 2-6 mark in the conference.
Junior point guard Azeez Ellegood turned in a terrific shooting performance that included 18 points on 5-of-6 from the field (3-for-4 from three-point range) and 5-of-6 from the foul line. Junior guard Sam McDuffie and junior forward Terrence Parkes pitched in 13 and 11, respectively.
GBC had no answer for Caldwell's sophomore guard, Malcolm Austin who scored a career-high 27 points to lead the Cougars. Antonio Brimley and Peter Diffley scored 19 points a piece for the Cougars as well.
Turnovers plagued GBC as the Lightning turned the ball over 20 times to just 11 by Caldwell. The Cougars also shot the ball exceptionally well, making 33-of-56 from the field (58.9 percent) to 23-of-46 (50.0 percent) by the Lightning.
Caldwell took control of the game early, breaking a 6-6 tie with an 18-0 spree that included seven points from Austin and six points from junior guard Antonio Brimley. The Cougars made 7-of-8 from the field while holding the Lightning scoreless on five attempts in building a 24-6 lead with 12 minutes left in the first half. The lead grew to as many as 20 before Goldey-Beacom was able to reduce the deficit to 15, 45-30 at the break. The Cougars shot 54.5 percent while committing just six turnovers compared to 11 for the Lightning in the first half.
The second half was more of the same, with GBC unable to come any closer than 15 points. A basket by Brimley and six consecutive free throws from freshman guard Robert McPherson sparked an 8-0 run that helped the Cougars record their largest lead of the game, 76-52 with just under nine minutes to play. Caldwell shot even better in the second half, making 15-of-23 (65.2 percent), and also excelled at the free throw line. In a game that saw the teams combine for 66 free throws and 52 fouls, the Cougars converted 25-of-29 (86.2 percent) from the line for the game compared to 25-of-37 (67.6 percent) for GBC.
The Lightning will try to bounce back on Thurs., Jan. 28 when they host CACC South Division foe Holy Family University at the Joseph West Jones Center.
