PIKE CREEK, Del. – Junior guard Sam McDuffie paced the Lightning with a career-high 24 points and seven rebounds as the Goldey-Beacom College men's basketball team defeated its intra-city rival Wilmington University, 71-65 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play Tues. night at the Joseph West Jones Center.
The Lightning improved to 12-3 overall and 6-0 in conference play as Wilmington fell to 5-8, 3-2 CACC. GBC head coach Chuck Hammond improved to 12-1 against the Lightning's cross-town rival.
McDuffie was one of three Lightning scorers in double-figures. Senior guard Kyle White scored 15 to go with a game-high six assists and junior forward Terrence Parkes registered 13 points and six rebounds. Junior point guard Azeez Ellegood also pitched in with nine points and three assists, providing a much needed spark in the second half with two three-point field goals.
Both teams shot about the same from the floor, as Wilmington hit at a 48.3 percent clip (28-of-58) and GBC connected at 49.1 percent (28-of-57). Foul shooting proved to be the difference as the Lightning doubled up the Wildcats from the foul line, hitting 12-of-18, compared to just 6-of-9 for Wilmington. Goldey-Beacom also held the edge on the glass, out-rebounding the 'Cats by a 33-27 margin.
Goldey-Beacom opened the game with an 11-4 run over the first three and a half minutes, but Wilmington answered right back with an 11-4 spurt of its own, to tie the game at 17 midway through the first half. From then on, the two teams traded baskets and the Wildcats headed into the break holding a slim 32-31 advantage.

The action was tight in the second half before a 10-2 GBC run that gave the Lightning a nine point (55-46) lead. The lead grew to as many as 12 (62-50) with 4:27 remaining, but Wilmington got within five in the closing seconds. That would be as close as the Wildcats would get though, as the Lightning held on for the conference win.

Wilmington was led by Brandon Savage's 24 points and six rebounds. Senior guard Mike Shipman added 13 points, and five assists, while Antonio Sherrod had 12 points.

The Lightning look to stay perfect in CACC play when they go on the road to face Caldwell College on Sat. night, 8 p.m.
