LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – After dropping the first game 25-17, the Goldey-Beacom Lightning volleyball team came storming back to spoil Lincoln University's home opener Tues. night at Manuel Rivero Hall, winning by a score of 3-1.
Lincoln (1-4) got off to an impressive start, taking the first game 25-17, and appeared to have the Lightning rattled. But head coach Richard Bowers' squad re-grouped and won the next three games 25-19, 25-14 and 25-20 to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Although the Lightning won with relative ease in the second and third games, it trailed for most of the way in the fourth game as Lincoln seemed to be gaining back some momentum. However, the Lightning were able to regain focus and come back from the deficit for the road win.
Freshman setter Monica Dempsey, fresh off her Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference rookie of the week honor, nearly had her third straight 20-assist game, falling just short with 18. She also had nine digs, seven kills and two serving aces on the night.
Sophomore outside hitter Roni Shaner, a CACC honorable mention last week, stayed hot with 11 kills, seven digs and three assists. Defensive specialist Christine Hudock also had a solid night with 10 digs and three assists.
GBC is back in action on Sat. at 11 a.m. as the Lightning host CACC opponent Dominican College.
