PHILADELPHIA – The Goldey-Beacom women's tennis team returned to the courts this past Thurs. in search of its third straight win to begin the season, and the Lightning earned it with five straight singles wins to claim victory, 6-1.
The Lightning won all three doubles matches to earn the doubles point and then following a tough loss for freshman Melanie Bonomo at No. 1 singles, the Lightning won five straight singles matches to get the win.
Sophomore Marina Sales and freshman Blanca Sancho first defeated Kiara Smith and Brigelle Hudock, 8-5 at No. 1 doubles. Bonomo and freshman Vanessa Velasquez followed with an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles, and Luciana and Daniela Pereira closed out doubles play with an 8-4 win at No. 3 over Tonya Rice and Pearl Wilkins.
La Salle's Smith would hand Bonomo her first singles loss of the year, 6-3, 6-1, but Sales would begin the five-match run for the Lightning with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Hudock at No. 2 singles. Sancho, Velasquez and the Pereira twins would then all win their matches to give GBC a 6-1 win.
The Lightning are in action this weekend at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Tournament hosted by Chestnut Hill College.
