SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Goldey-Beacom College women's tennis team improved to 2-0 with a dominating, 9-0 shutout win over host Shippensburg University on Sunday afternoon.
The Lightning, who have had their last two matches postponed due to inclement weather, had not played since their 8-1 win over Neumann on Sept. 2.
GBC's No. 1 doubles duo of sophomore Marina Sales and freshman Blanca Sancho got things started for the Lightning with an 8-3 victory over Shippensburg's Jackie Kramer and Jess Lodek.
The freshmen duo of Melanie Bonomo and Vanessa Velasquez then cruised past Hannah Lolley and Monica Berardi, 8-0. Followed by sophomore Jennifer Jones and freshman Anastasia Chibrikova's 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles over Ali Horvath and Cassie Sidone.
Jones and Chibrikova improved to 1-1 for the year, while the other two doubles teams improved to 2-0.
In singles play, Bonomo led things off with a 6-2, 6-0 win at the No. 1 slot. Sales, Sancho and Velasquez followed with convincing wins at No. 2 through No. 4, and the Pereira twins, Luciana and Daniela, won their matches at the No. 5 and 6 spots.
All six improved to 2-0 on the season as GBC is yet to lose a singles match.
The Lighting are back in action on Wed., 4 p.m. as they host Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference rival Holy Family at Del Castle Park.
