PIKE CREEK, Del. - Red-shirt sophomore guard Jacinda Jones led all scorers with 29 points to propel the Goldey-Beacom College women's basketball team to a 70-57 victory over Bloomsburg University in non-league play Tues. night at the Joseph West Jones Center.
Jones scored 19 of her 29 in the second half as the Lightning, 0-7 when trailing at halftime this season prior to tonight, overcame a 34-29 halftime deficit and outscored the Huskies, 41-23 in the second half. Junior guard Janae Weldon (14 points) helped keep the Lightning in striking distance with 10 first-half points.
Head coach Jen Carleton got significant contributions from several different players tonight, particularly freshmen forwards Irene Hudson and Devonne Richardson. Hudson came off the bench to score 11 points, grab eight rebounds and dish out three assists, and Richardson scored seven points to go with a season-high 17 rebounds. Jones also had a season-high 14 rebounds, including eight on the offensive glass. Also, junior forward Arielle Alford made her first start of the season and registered three points and two rebounds in 13 minutes of work.
GBC dominated on the boards tonight, 59-34 and shot very well from three-point range, making 8-of-17 from long-distance, including 5-of-9 in the first half. Jones was 5-of-9 herself from behind the arc.
Bloomsburg committed 27 fouls to just 15 by GBC, and the Lightning made the Huskies pay as they converted 22 foul shots to BU's 10.
The Lightning (3-7), winners of two straight games, enter back into Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play with a visit to the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia on Jan. 7 at 6 p.m. GBC (0-3 CACC) seeks its first conference win of the season.
