SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Trailing by two with six seconds left in regulation, Goldey-Beacom College senior guard Kyle White went coast-to-coast and made a layup with one second on the clock to force overtime, where the visiting Lightning would outscore Shippensburg, 17-8 and come away with an 89-80 victory.
White led all scorers as he tied a career-high with 28 points. He also added a game-high eight assists and six rebounds. With tonight's performance, White has now scored over 500 points in his short career at GBC.
Junior guard Azeez Ellegood also had a huge night for the Lightning, particularly in overtime where he scored 11 of his 22 points. With GBC up 83-80, Ellegood took an assist from White and swished a rainbow three-point field goal with just 35 seconds left on the clock to give GBC an insurmountable six-point lead.
The Lightning (1-1) also got a double-double from junior forward Terrence Parkes (17 points, 11 rebounds), and junior guard Sam McDuffie pitched in 11 points and eight rebounds.
GBC took a 32-27 lead on the strength of White's 13 points and 7-of-7 shooting from the free-throw line as a team, but Shippensburg, 4-0 up to this point, would not go away quietly in the second half.
The Lightning and Red Raiders engaged in a seesaw battle in the second half, with the two squads combining for 12 lead changes and nine ties in the contest. A key exchange came with 1:13 left to play when Shippensburg's Craig Van Scyoc drained a three-pointer off an in-bounds play that tied the score at 70-all, following a traveling violation by GBC.
On the ensuing possession, the Lightning missed a jumper and the Red Raiders' Dane Lauber grabbed the rebound. After working the clock, Lamar Jackson (11 points, five assists) made a move and converted a layup that gave SU a 72-70 lead with just six seconds left. However, White answered with a layup at the other end with one second left to send the contest into overtime.
There, the Lightning took the game over. Daziah Miller, who led the Red Raiders with 24 points on 9-of-14 from the field, drained a jumper with 3:01 left in overtime to bring SU within one point. But the Lightning closed with a 12-4 run to seal the victory. GBC, which sunk 22-of-24 free-throw attempts on the night, made 7-of-8 in overtime to hand Shippensburg (4-1) its first loss of the season.
The Lightning are back in action on Thurs. night when they host Washington Adventist University in the second game of a GBC men's and women's double-header.
