PIKE CREEK, Del. – On an overcast Saturday afternoon in northern Delaware on the extremely hilly Carousel Park, Goldey-Beacom College hosted the seventh annual Cross Country Fall Classic.
Twelve teams and 131 runners (57 men, 74 women) participated in the event. The GBC men's cross country team placed fourth of six teams with 89 points and the women's team placed seventh of eight with 161 points.
Bloomfield College took first place in the men's race with 29 points, followed by Cumberland Community College (58) and Lancaster Bible College (76). GBC was fourth, and Eastern University (117) and Monroe College (166) rounded out the final six.
In the women's race, Cedar Crest College took first with 49 points, followed by Eastern (69) and Stevenson (84). CCBC finished fourth with 93, and Bloomfield College rounded out the top-five at 98. Wesley (141) finished sixth, followed by GBC and Monroe (231).
Award winners for the Lightning were Ben Kinley (3rd place, 29:51), Eizabeth Williams (8th place, 22:53) and Paul Graybeal (19th, 33:02).
Williams time was the fastest a GBC female runner has ever run at Carousel Park. According to head coach Brian Conley, “Liz is now setting her sites on the conference meet and wondering how fast she can really go.”
Other career personal bests for the Lightning were juniors Kaydean Hayden (48th, 27:36) and Nitasia Dupree (53rd, 28:03) and senior Myishea Hales (63rd, 31:05).
Conley was pleased with both teams' performance on Sat., and he expects that the team will improve as the season progresses.
“The team ran very well on the hardest course of the year. I expect much better times as the season nears the end,” Conley said.
