Lady Lightning Tennis Defeats the Lady Knights in Season Opener

Wilmington, DE – Lady Lightning Tennis Defeats the Lady Knights in Season Opener

The Goldey-Beacom College Women's Tennis Team hosted the Neumann College Knights in the home and season opener for the Lightning.  The last time the two schools faced off the Knights defeated the Lightning 7-2.  With a stronger and more experienced team, the Lightning went out to turn the tide around and defeat the Knights. 

Sophomore Luisiana Souto returned in her spots of #1 singles and #1 doubles from last year.  Newcomer Luciana Pereira took over #2 singles and joins Souto on the #1 doubles.  Daniela Pereira is in the #3 singles and #2 doubles position while Anastoshia Lewis is in the #4 singles and #2 doubles.  Rounding out the Lightning lineup is Jennifer Jones in the #5 singles and #3 doubles and Graduate Student and four year member of the Lightning Tennis Team Stephanie Bain in the #6 singles and #3 doubles position.

With the team settled for their first match they first took the court for their doubles matches.  Souto and Pereira, L.  quickly came out of the gate and defeated their first opponents of the season 8-3.  Jones and Bain (#3 doubles) joined in on the 8-3 win over their first opponents.  Pereira, D. and Lewis (#2 doubles) faced the Knights toughest doubles team of Lindsey Ravior and Michelle Steward, but ultimately defeating the Knights team 9-7.

Singles were next for the Lightning.  Luisiana Souto took control and in quick and decisive manner swept the Knights Courtney Hartel 6-0; 6-0.  Luciana Pereira defeated Ali DeTolla (NC) 6-1; 6-1 for her first Lightning win, and following in her sisters style Daniela Pereira got her first Lightning win as well, as she defeated Allison Trout (NC) 6-2; 6-4. 

The Lightning defeated the Knights of Neumann College 6-3.  The Lightning will next take on Rosemont College on September 4, 2008 at Delcastle Tennis Center in Wilmington, Delaware.
