Brian Sheehan

Brian Sheehan, who enjoyed a successful eight-year stint at Widener University, is in his second season as Goldey-Beacom’s women’s soccer coach

“Coach Sheehan brings a wealth of success from his previous stops at the high school and college levels,” Goldey-Beacom Director of Athletics Chuck Hammond said. “Every program that he has led has experienced immediate and positive growth, which has turned into winning results.

“Not only has Coach Sheehan been successful with his teams on the soccer field, but they also have been successful in the classroom,” Hammond added.

That previous success was on display during Sheehan’s first season with the Lightning.  The squad in 2014 went 9-6-1 for the team’s first winning campaign since 2003 and played in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament for the first time since 2006.  Sheehan’s leadership helped senior Alex Smith to be named third team NSCAA All-East Region for the program’s first such honor and Honorable Mention Scholar All-East Region.

A 2005 graduate of Neumann University, Sheehan compiled an 88-47-16 (.636) record at Widener.  In addition, the Pride notched seven winning seasons during his tenure that included 14-win campaigns in 2007 and 2013.

During his first five seasons at Widener, Sheehan led the Pride to at least 11 wins each year and earned a berth in the Commonwealth Conference Tournament three times.  The Pride also advanced to the ECAC South Tournament each of Sheehan’s first three seasons.

After posting a 13-7-1 record in his first season, the Pride earned a 14-6-1 mark in 2007 that included a six-match winning streak.

Sheehan in 2008 guided the Pride to a second-place finish in the conference and an 11-6-2 record, earning the right to host a conference tournament game for the first time in school history.

The 2010 campaign saw the Pride ranked as high as 21st in the country and finished the year 11-4-2.

During the 2013 season, the Pride set several school records in compiling a 14-3-3 record. They won 11 consecutive matches and opened the season with a school-record 12-match unbeaten streak (11-0-1).

The Pride also set school records by recording 12 shutouts, including a streak of six consecutive.

In addition to its success on the soccer field, Widener also earned the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Team Academic Award during each of the last three years.  Also, 15 student-athletes were named to the Middle Atlantic Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll in 2013.

Prior to being the head coach at Widener, Sheehan spent five seasons as the women’s soccer coach at Rutgers-Camden and posted a 51-31-10 record. During his final three seasons, Rutgers-Camden averaged 11 wins per season that included a 12-6-2 record in 2004 when the Lady Raptors set school records with 65 goals and 188 points.

In 13 seasons as a college head coach at the NCAA level, Sheehan has guided his teams to a 139-78-26 record, including 11 winning seasons.  He also spent one season as the head coach at Gloucester County College, guiding the 1997 team to its first appearance in the Region 19 Tournament.
