Janae Weldon and Terrence Parkes Named January GBC Athletes of the Month
PIKE CREEK, Del. – Junior guard Janae Weldon of the women’s basketball team and junior forward Terrence Parkes of the men’s basketball team have been named Goldey-Beacom College female and male athletes of the month, respectively for the month of January.
Both led their teams to 6-2 records during the month of January culminating in wins for both teams over the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men’s and women’s top North Division squad, Bloomfield College this past Saturday, Jan. 30.
Weldon, a Trenton, N.J. native from Trenton Catholic High School, averaged 10.5 points per game, 3.1 rebounds per game, dished out 15 assists, blocked two shots and had four steals during the month of January. One of the team’s four captains, she led the team in three-point field goals (17), three-point field goal shooting percentage (.459), and free-throw shooting percentage (.789). Weldon recorded three double-figure scoring outputs against Concordia (N.Y.) (15 points), Washington Adventist (10 points), and Caldwell College (26 points). Her 26 points in the Lightning’s electrifying 73-72 overtime win at Caldwell was a career-high. She was 9-for-18 from the field, including 6-of-9 from three-point range on that night, to go with four rebounds and three assists.
In her third season at Goldey-Beacom, Weldon has accumulated 781 points over her career – just one point shy of tying Brianna Maloney (’04) for fifth on the school’s career scoring list (from 2001-present). She has scored 183 points thus far this season and has helped the Lightning already equal their overall (nine) and conference (five) win totals from last season. After starting the season 1-7, GBC has won eight of its last 10 games.
Parkes, in his first season with the Lightning after transferring in from Delaware State, has been a great addition to the Lightning’s lineup and played particularly well in the month of January. In eight games, he averaged 16.8 points, a team-best 8.5 rebounds, and had team-highs of 15 three-point field goals and 14 steals. He scored in double-figures in all eight games, including a 25-point performance in a heartbreaking, 76-74 loss to then No. 6-ranked Kutztown on Jan. 5, and a 23-point effort the following game in a 79-56 thumping of USP on Jan. 7. He also recorded four double-figure rebounding games, giving him four double-doubles in the month of January in games against Kutztown (25 points, 10 rebounds), Washington Adventist (15 points, 13 rebounds), Holy Family (17 points, 10 rebounds) and Bloomfield (18 points, 14 rebounds).
For the season, the New Rochelle, N.Y. native ranks sixth in the CACC in scoring (17.2 ppg), fourth in rebounding (9.4 rpg), eighth in three-point field goals made (18), and ninth in three-point field goal shooting percentage (.381). His rebounding has been key as the Lightning are 13-1 this season when outrebounding their opponent and just 1-3 when they are outrebounded.
Parkes has helped GBC to an outstanding 14-4 record and 8-1 mark in the conference. Right now, the Lightning are the top team in the CACC South Division.
