Miley Jones and Maria Empadinhas Lead Women’s Soccer to 1-0 Triumph at Felician

Senior Miley Jones (Pemberton, NJ) scored in the 65th minute and sophomore Maria Empadinhas (Cascais, Portugal) was incredible with 11 saves in Goldey-Beacom's first victory of the season, a 1-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference triumph at Felician in Rutherford, NJ.
 
Jones in her four years has been a consistently solid player looking to help the Lightning take the next step.  That step was a big one when she received a pass 20 yards out from junior Jessica Jensen (Las Vegas, NV) and banged one in off the left post for her fifth career goal.
 
The goal held up thanks to the incredibly and continuously spectacular play from Empadinhas, who made 11 saves that included seven in the second half and many on the stunning side.  It is the fourth time this season she has notched double figures in saves and it is her first career shutout.
 
The wide-open contest saw the Lightning (1-4, 1-0 CACC) record a 16-15 shot advantage with Jones getting six and senior Lexy Yeager (West Deptford, NJ) adding three in the squad's first league-opening win since 2022.
 
It also marks Heather Faasse's first victory as Goldey-Beacom head coach.  She is the first full-time coach in team history, the first female coach in program annals and has the team showing noticeable improvement each game in the young season.
 
Brooklyn Niemy had five shots and Isabella Riollano made 10 saves for the Golden Falcons (2-5, 0-1).
 
Goldey-Beacom on Saturday is home against Monroe, beginning at 1:00 pm.
