Baseball’s Winning Streak Hits Eight With Doubleheader Sweep of Georgian Court

Goldey-Beacom won an 11-inning thriller, 8-7, on a single from sophomore Jake Macey (Smyrna, DE) and then got a 4-3 victory in the nightcap for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader sweep over Georgian Court at Doyle Field in Hockessin, DE.

Macey's squeeze bunt in the ninth inning of game one forged a 6-6 tie.  After the Lions took the lead in the top of the 10th, sophomore Zach Smethers (Nazareth, PA) cracked a leadoff to lock things at seven.

The Lightning finally ended things in the 11th.  The squad loaded the bases with none out before Macey drove one to deep right field that turned into a single, plating freshman Shawn Roy (New Castle, DE).

Macey closed with three hits and three RBI, Roman Keith (Selbyville, DE) also had three hits with fellow sophomore Brent Williams (Woodstown, NJ) recording two hits that included a two-run homer.  Sophomore George Starr (Franklinville, NJ) struck out seven over six innings and New Market, MD sophomore Britton Wildasin (2-0) got the final two outs in the 11th for the win.

Game two saw junior Bobby Stewart (Newark, DE) lined an RBI triple and Keith adding a run-scoring double late in the frame for a 2-1 GBC lead.  That margin ballooned to 4-1 in the third when Macey crushed a two-run long ball.

The Lightning were clinging to a 4-3 lead entering the seventh and final inning when the Lions (5-22, 3-14 CACC) got the first two hitters on.  Sophomore Cody Klotz (Frederica, DE) was called out of the bullpen and got two strikeouts before a flyout to finally end things.

Stewart went 3-for-3 for the Lightning (21-11, 14-3), who recorded their sixth straight 20-win season.  Downingtown, PA senior Connor Blence (4-2), the reigning CACC Pitcher of the Week, struck out nine over six innings in yielding no earned runs.

The three-game series between these teams ends Saturday with an 11:00 am contest in Jackson, NJ.
