Softball Earns Split with Bentley in Florida

Goldey-Beacom softball continued play in Melbourne, FL against Bentley and took a 4-0 loss in game one of the day before rallying back to win 12-11.

Game one saw majority of the action from Bentley's side, with the opening run coming in the second inning on a sacrifice fly ball from Katie Welch to score Emma Callahan. An RBI double from Maddie Baker in the third inning made the score 2-0 before an unearned Bentley run in the fourth. Callahan wrapped the scoring in the fifth inning on a single to left field that sent Michelle Diaz home to give Bentley the 4-0 win.

Game two saw the batting pick up for both sides, with GBC going on a streak first on a double from freshman Kelci Gingras (Orem, UT) to score junior McKenna Frank (Oxford, PA). A passed ball gave senior Rayna Pelcak (Laurel Springs, N.J.) the opportunity to head home and an RBI single from junior DeLanie Perry (Deland, FL) made the score 3-0 after the first inning. The Lightning continued to be a force in the second inning with senior Chasedy Johnson (Egg Harbor City, NJ) heading home on an error, senior Delaney Insinga (Southampton, NJ) scoring on an error, Gingras doubling to score Frank, a wild pitch resulting in Gingras scoring, and back-to-back doubles from senior Autumn Simpson (Elkton, MD) and Emma Friel (Coatesville, PA) to score freshman Jillian Coulbourn (Frankford, DE) and Perry to make the score 9-0.

Bentley had a quick response in the third inning with a Katie Welch double, a single from Becca Harris, an RBI from Hailey Feiler, and an unearned run from Harris, making the score 9-4 heading into the fourth. Bentley continued their runs with a double from Emma Callahan to score two, an RBI single from Michelle Diaz, and a three-run double by Ella Bunovsky to give Bentley the lead in the sixth inning.

Goldey-Beacom once again had a response to this run, starting with another double from Gingras to score junior Chaneyl Johnson (Egg Harbor City, NJ), an RBI single from Perry, and ending with the winning run coming from Friel on a single to center field to score Coulbourn. Michelle Diaz homered in the top of the seventh to bring Bentley within one, but strong pitching and fielding gave Goldey-Beacom the victory.

Goldey-Beacom continues play in Florida on Tuesday, when it plays Bemidji State at 10:00am and Saint Thomas Aquinas to follow.
