Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Dealt 91-81 Loss by Felician in the CACC Final

Goldey-Beacom's drive for its first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference title came up just short in a 91-81 loss against Felician in Caldwell, NJ.

The expected track meet masquerading as a basketball game ensued with nerves obvious on both sides.  That came to fruition 2:35 into the game when Felician's third team all-league player Moussa Camara went to the bench with two fouls.

The Golden Falcons (27-3) showed no ill effects in the next 3 1/2 minutes, using an 18-5 run in gaining a 25-9 lead with 14:10 left in the half.  Jared White scored six points with Tristin Harcourt adding five for Felician, which missed two dunks in that spurt and later scored on the same possession each time.

Goldey-Beacom showed plenty of hustle, a key in Saturday's semifinal win over Dominican (NY).  Unfortunately, it did not show on the stat sheet with the Lightning shooting just 26 percent (10-of-39) percent from the floor in the opening half and 3-of-19 from 3-point range.  Tre Powell (Mount Laurel, NJ) scored 10 points, fellow sophomore Brian Blanchet (North Babylon, NY) netted eight and junior Julian Williams (Fayetteville, NC) hauled in eight rebounds.

An expected run from the Lightning took place to open the second half, an 11-4 spurt over the first 3:45 that made it 45-42 with Williams netting five points.

Felician had abandoned its full-court press because of foul trouble, but went back to it in order to subside Goldey-Beacom's scoring binge.  That resulted in a 7-0 run to give the top-seeded team a 52-42 margin with 15:06 to go.

The second-seeded Lightning did not give up and continued to take advantage of the Golden Falcons' lineup, getting a layup from Williams with 7:43 remaining for a 65-59 deficit.

That was when Felician secured the title with a 12-3 run over the next 2 1/2 minutes for a 77-62 cushion with 5:13 to play.  Jeremiah Anderson, the league's Player of the Year, was too much with 10 points.

Powell, a first team all-league selection, again was a stalwart by closing with 26 points in playing all 40 minutes.  He made the all-tournament team by averaging 26.0 points and 5.3 rebounds over the three games in shooting 50 percent (23-of-46) from the field.

Williams finished with 18 points and 14 rebounds in being picked to the all-tournament squad.  It was his sixth double-double of the campaign and third in the last six contests.

Junior Emarquis Jones (Brooklyn, NY), a third team All-CACC pick, ended with 12 points.  He earned a spot on the all-tournament team after averaging 19.0 points and 9.0 rebounds over three games.

Anderson was picked the tournament's Most Outstanding Player after scoring 34 points on 11-of-17 shooting, but it was Noah Hutchins who ultimately was the day's most valuable player.  He scored 20 points and constantly was a nuisance on both ends of the floor with clutch baskets, timely defense and drawn charges.

Goldey-Beacom (21-10) now waits to see if it will receive an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament.  The squad broke the school record for most victories, had an eight-game winning streak from January 6-February 3 and its percentage index is sixth in the NCAA East Region heading into Sunday.

Eight teams are picked for the NCAA Tournament in each of the eight regions and the selection show is Sunday at 11:00 pm on NCAA.com.
