Men’s Basketball Paints a Masterpiece in the CACC Semifinals, 108-92 Over Dominican

Goldey-Beacom dominated the paint and broke the school record for most victories in a season with a 108-92 triumph over Dominican (NY) in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament semifinals in Caldwell, NJ.

No. 2 seed Goldey-Beacom (21-9) is in the CACC final for the first time since 2012 and the fourth overall, seeking its first title.  It will face top-seeded Felician on Sunday at noon (Daylight Saving Time) with an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament on the line.

Its previous mark of 20 victories was accomplished four previous times.  This is the third time it has happened under 10th-year coach TJ Dekmar with the last coming in 2017-18.

The 108 points is the most scored in any CACC Tournament game in the NCAA era.  The previous mark of 107 was accomplished by Bloomfield in 2005 against Felician.

Goldey-Beacom in the opening half not only had its way near the glass, but had Dominican gasping for air by the period's end.  GBC scored 30 points in the paint during the half, netted 16 second-chance points and owned a 36-18 rebounding edge that included 14 offensive boards.

It certainly helped that the Lightning's tenacity forced three Chargers starters to commit at least two fouls in the half with Tyler Edore getting three.

Goldey-Beacom outscored Dominican 35-18 over the final 12:19 of the half for a 52-41 lead by shooting 11-of-28 from the field and forcing eight turnovers.  Sophomore Tre Powell (Mount Laurel, NJ) and junior Emarquis Jones (Brooklyn, NY) scored eight points apiece in the run.

Jones poured in 16 points over the first 20 minutes on 6-of-10 shooting to go with nine rebounds and Powell scored 13 points.

Even though the Chargers closed to 73-64 with 11:25 left, the second half was anticlimactic.  The Lightning went on a 23-11 run in opening a 96-75 cushion with 5:57 to go.  Sophomore Brian Blanchet (North Babylon, NY) was a major factor in the game and this run by scoring 10 points.

Blanchet knew he would have to shoulder a great deal of the load and did just that, scoring a career-best 23 points to go with eight rebounds and three big 3-pointers.  Jones, a third team all-league pick, had 22 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists for his sixth double-double of the campaign.

Powell, a first-team All-CACC selection, scored 19 points, Elisha Brown (Bowie, MD) netted 15 with fellow junior Julian Williams (Fayetteville, NC) adding 14 for GBC, which closed with 48 points in the paint.

Goldey-Beacom hauled in 58 rebounds, a team season high and the most for a CACC Tournament game in the NCAA era.  Bloomfield held the previous mark with against Philadelphia University on March 9, 2013.

Chance Morrish poured in 22 points, Javel Cherry netted 21 with Koi D. Kirk Jr. adding 19 points for the Chargers (14-16).
