Softball Splits Two in Florida

Goldey-Beacom's Florida trip began with a 4-3 triumph over Concordia-Saint Paul before an 8-6 setback to Florida Tech in Melbourne, FL.

Goldey-Beacom in the opening game scored twice in the first inning on an error and then an RBI single from junior DeLanie Perry (Deland, FL) for a 2-0 margin.  The Golden Bears closed to 2-1 in the third on Danni Sharum's RBI single before freshman Bella Musey (Millville, NJ) got a run-scoring groundout in the last of the frame for a 3-1 Lightning cushion.

Concordia (7-9) plated two unearned runs in the top of the fifth before GBC took a 4-3 lead in the sixth.  Senior Autumn Simpson (Elkton, MD) ripped a leadoff triple and freshman pinch-hitter Jillian Coulbourn (Frankford, DE) got her first collegiate RBI with a single to the shortstop.

The Lightning then escaped a potential mess in the seventh.  Alexis Monty and Sharum singled to lead off before freshman right fielder Ayri Hansen (Lakewood, CA) made a great diving catch to rob Katie Klotz of a hit.  On the same play, Monty tagged up and was caught in a rundown to complete the double play.

Nora Brandt singled and Ava Blake was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Gabby Martinez grounded out.

Sophomore Bri Cole (Rising Sun, MD) went 3-for-3 with Hansen and junior McKenna Frank (Oxford, PA) getting two hits apiece.  Blackwood, NJ junior Molly Skelly (1-0) gave up no earned runs over 3 2/3 innings.

Game two was a tough one against a perennially strong Florida Tech (14-3-1) side.  Emma Chisholm clubbed a two-run homer in the third to give the Panthers a 3-1 and her RBI double keyed a three-run fourth for a 6-1 margin.

The Lightning then made things interesting with four runs in the fifth for a 6-5 deficit.  Delaney Insinga (Southampton, NJ) had an RBI single, fellow senior Rayna Pelcak (Laurel Spring, NJ) lifted a sacrifice fly, Simpson got a run-scoring single and senior Emma Friel (Coatesville, PA) added an RBI double.

The margin grew to 8-5 in the bottom of the fifth before freshman Kelci Gingras (Orem, UT) scored on an error in the top of the seventh for a two-run deficit.  GBC had the tying run at second base, but could get no closer.

Hansen closed with three hits for the Lightning (1-3).

Please note the schedule change for Saturday.  Goldey-Beacom now will be playing Cedarville at 11:15 am and no longer is playing Charleston (WV).  GBC then will face Walsh at 2:30 pm.
