Men’s Basketball Clinches Home Game in the CACC Tournament With 80-73 Win at Holy Family

Goldey-Beacom rallied from 13 points down in the first half and 11 in the second half, clinching a spot in the top four of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference with an 80-73 victory at Holy Family in Philadelphia, PA.

The win guarantees the Lightning (18-9, 12-7 CACC) a home quarterfinal game in the CACC Tournament for the fifth time in the program's last eight competitive seasons.  The game will be next Tuesday at 6:00 pm against an opponent to be determined.

Down 53-42 with 12:41 left, the Lightning exploded for 14 consecutive points in just over four minutes for their first lead of the game.  Junior Julian Williams (Fayetteville, NC) scored four points in that stretch and his layup with 8:47 remaining capped the spurt for a 56-53 margin.

Goldey-Beacom's lead was 62-59 with just under five minutes left before the visitors used a 9-2 run for a 71-61 margin with 1:51 to play.  Junior Emarquis Jones (Brooklyn, NY) scored four points in that time, capping it with two free throws.

It was the Lightning's defense that also shined during this period, repeatedly forcing the Tigers into bad shots and refusing to give an inch in the paint.  The Tigers in the second half shot just 28 percent (10-of-36) from the field and 3-of-13 from three-point range.

It was a 74-66 margin with 72 seconds left after senior Justin Allen (Boca Raton, FL) gave the Lightning some breathing room, going 1-for-2 from the line.  Holy Family was not disappearing, especially when Elijah Hernandez canned a 3-pointer with 53 seconds to go for a 74-69 contest.

After sophomore Tre Powell (Mount Laurel, NJ) hit once from the line with 36 seconds remaining, Holy Family had the ball down 76-71 looking to make it a one-possession game.  Omarion Jett was called upon and he came through by hitting a driving layup with 26 seconds to play for a 76-73 game.

The Tigers on that play capitalized on a highly advantageous situation as they had six men on the court and no one noticed during the play.  The officials finally figured it out after the basket, but still counted the goal before assessing Holy Family a technical foul.

Powell drilled the two technical free throws to make it 78-73 and Jones canned a pair from the stripe with 13 seconds left for the final.

Powell ended with 22 points, Anthony Akande (Newark, NJ) scored 13, fellow sophomore Brian Blanchet (North Babylon, NY) netted 12 and Allen poured in 11 for the Lightning, who have won 11 of their last 12 games from the Tigers.

Hernandez scored 21 points and Di'Andre Howell-South netted 12 for the Tigers (13-14, 7-12).

Holy Family, which in the first half led by as many as 40-27 with 1:21 left, shot 56 percent (15-of-27) from the field and opened a 40-32 halftime lead despite Goldey-Beacom shooting 43 percent (13-of-30).  Blanchet and Allen netted seven points apiece for the Lightning.

Goldey-Beacom is home Saturday for Senior Day against Bridgeport, after 3:00 pm.  It also is the College's Hoop it Up day as we celebrate an afternoon of basketball, community spirit and alumni connection.
