Men’s Basketball Claims Second Place With 106-101 Overtime Win Over Bridgeport

Goldey-Beacom survived a seemingly never-ending roller coaster to clinch second place in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference with a 106-101 overtime victory over Bridgeport at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

Goldey-Beacom will face seventh-seeded Georgian Court in the CACC Tournament quarterfinals on Tuesday, beginning at 6:00 pm at the Jones Center.  The winner heads to championship weekend, beginning next Saturday in Caldwell, NJ.

The Lightning, who trailed 77-68 with 6:04 left, had the ball in an 87-87 tie with under a minute to go.  Sophomore Anthony Akande (Newark, NJ) saw an opening and hit a driving layup with 20 seconds to go for an 89-87 margin.

The Purple Knights looked for the tie on the other end, but Jayson Handy missed a layup and junior Elisha Brown (Bowie, MD) got the rebound with 1.4 seconds left when he was fouled.  He missed both and Bridgeport called timeout.

They threw it the length of the court and John Dash was fouled with 0.4 seconds to go.  He made both free throws and the game headed to overtime.

Dash's 3-pointer with 48 seconds left brought the Purple Knights to a 97-66 deficit before sophomore Tre Powell (Mount Laurel, NJ) canned two free throws two seconds later for a three-point game.

Eddie Fisher missed a potential tying 3-pointer from the left corner and sophomore Brian Blanchet (North Babylon, NY) corralled the rebound.  He made one of two for a 100-96 margin with 35 seconds to play.

After Jordan Miller hit once from the line with 27 seconds left for UB, Powell drained two more with the same time remaining for a 102-97 game.  Twice more Bridgeport got the margin within three, but junior Jalen Robinson (South Orange, NJ) made two free throws with 16 seconds to go and senior Justin Allen (Boca Raton, FL) followed suit with six seconds remaining for the final.

The two hour, 31 minute game saw 65 fouls and six players disqualified.

Powell closed with 29 points on 7-of-10 shooting, junior Julian Williams (Fayetteville, NC) had 20 and 10 rebounds, Brown scored 17 with Blanchet adding 12 for the Lightning (19-9, 13-7 CACC).

Jason Edokpayi netted 32 points on 11-of-17 shooting with 14 rebounds. Handy scored 20 points, Dash poured in 17 with Shedrach Makanjuola adding 10 for Bridgeport (10-17, 7-13).
