A two-run rally in the seventh inning was not enough for Goldey-Beacom, which could not overcome an early deficit in a 3-2 loss to Wilmington at the NCAA Tournament in New Castle, DE.
Goldey-Beacom now falls into the elimination bracket and will face the winner of Friday's second game, which is between Southern New Hampshire and Bridgeport. The winner of that contest will have to defeat Wilmington twice in order to reach the East Region final.
Please note Saturday's schedule has not been announced. The tournament will return to Goldey-Beacom's campus as Friday's commencement necessitated play at Wilmington University.
Wilmington grabbed a 1-0 lead in the last half of the first inning on its home field. Tristyn Stewart doubled, reached third on Gracie Mabrey's sacrifice and scored on Bella Barnes' one-out single.
The Wildcats had the top of the order up in the third and plated two more, loading the bases with Stewart getting a single, Mabrey hit by a pitch and Haley Grygo reaching on catcher's interference. Stewart scored on a passed ball after Barnes struck out and Mabrey crossed home on a wild pitch.
A 3-1/2 hour rain delay rain delay only dampened the excitement until the seventh inning, when the Lightning provided some fireworks.
Bryn Bohmann (Saskatoon, SK) cracked a one-out double, Wynter Radcliffe (Glen Burnie, MD) singled her to third and Alex Lowry (Wenonah, NJ) continued the senior parade by driving home Bohmann with an RBI single. Junior Emma Friel (Coatesville, PA) got a two-out single to plate pinch-runner Bri Snover (Claymont, DE) and make it 3-2, but Delani Sheehan came out of the bullpen for the final out.
Senior Caitlyn Burch (Mechanicsville, MD) struck out three over five innings in a no-decision for the Lightning.
Stewart closed 3-for-3, Maddie Vollmar (4-1) struck out four over 6 2/3 innings and Sheehan got her second save of the campaign.
