Senior Caitlyn Burch (Mechanicsville, MD) threw a no-hitter in Goldey-Beacom's 5-0 triumph over Southern New Hampshire and her squad rallied for three runs in the last of the seventh inning for an improbable 3-2 victory over Wilmington at the NCAA Tournament in Wilmington, DE.
Goldey-Beacom (40-15) and Wilmington (34-17) now will meet in a seventh and deciding game Sunday at 11:00 am at the Jackson Complex for the NCAA East Regional 2 crown. On the line is a trip to the East Region final against the East Regional 1 winner.
Burch (20-5) simply was outstanding against SNHU, striking out five over seven innings and facing just three batters above the minimum. She increased her own GBC single-season wins record and moved to 7-1 over her last nine appearances following the nightcap.
It is the first no-hitter for the Lightning over the last 14 seasons. Game-by-game records prior are not the greatest.
Goldey-Beacom, batting first on its home field, strung together a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Ariana Mirenda (Reading, PA) lined a one-out single, stole second and scored when fellow senior Alex Lowry (Wenonah, NJ) roped a single to right-center field.
Momentum stayed in the Lightning's dugout in third. Sophomore Chasedy Johnson (Egg Harbor City, NJ) legged out a bunt single, was sacrificed to second by sophomore McKenna Frank (Oxford, PA) and scored when senior Wynter Radcliffe (Glen Burnie, MD) lined a single up the middle for a 2-0 margin.
Pinch-runner Chaneyl Johnson (Egg Harbor City, NJ) scored on a wild pitch in the fourth before Goldey-Beacom got two more in the fifth for a 5-0 cushion. Chasedy Johnson got another leadoff single, again was sacrificed to second by Frank, Mirenda crushed an RBI triple and scored when Radcliffe's grounder was misplayed.
Chasedy Johnson ended 3-for-3 with all coming when leading off and Mirenda collected three hits for GBC.
The Lightning were in a 2-0 hole entering the seventh inning of game two when the comeback began. Junior Emma Friel (Coatesville, PA) led off with a single and took second on a groundout from freshman Josalyn McMillan (Rising Sun, MD). Chasedy Johnson continued her amazing day with an infield single and Frank plated Friel with an RBI single for a 2-1 game.
Mirenda was brought in to deliver clutch hits and she did on this day, lining a double down the right-field line to score Johnson and level things at two. Maddie Vollmar replaced Delani Sheehan in the circle and, after Radcliffe walked to load the bases, Lowry hit a grounder that induced a wild throw to the plate and allowed Frank to score.
Burch again was awesome in finishing the day with no earned runs allowed over 14 innings. In this contest, she struck out five over seven innings in yielding just two unearned runs and five hits.
Frank had two hits for the Lightning.
Tristyn Stewart rapped two hits and Sydney Hatch lined an RBI single for the Wildcats.
