Game Recap: Softball |

Softball’s Season Ends With Heartbreaking, Eight-Inning Loss to Wilmington in the NCAA Tournament

Goldey-Beacom played as great and as clean a game as one would expect in the NCAA Tournament, but saw its season end with a 1-0, eight-inning loss to Wilmington in the East Region 2 Final at the Jackson Complex in Wilmington, DE.

Goldey-Beacom (40-16) this season provided history, pride and memories that will live for many years.  The squad notched the most single-season victories for any team in the Athletic Department's 35-year history, became the first GBC program to host an NCAA Tournament event on the Pike Creek campus and played in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history.

The Lightning also made the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament in three consecutive seasons for the first time in 19 years and won multiple games in said tournament in back-to-back seasons for the first time.

GBC this season saw designated player Wynter Radcliffe (Glen Burnie, MD) named National Fastpitch Coaches Association first team All-East Region and pitcher Caitlyn Burch (Mechanicsville, MD) tabbed second team.  Burch, Radcliffe and utility player Ariana Mirenda (Reading, PA) were picked first team all-league with pitcher Morgan McLane (Clayton, DE) and first baseman Bryn Bohmann (Saskatoon, SK) named second team.

More good news is to come with the expected release of the D2CCA All-East Region squads.

It was an amazing tournament for Burch, who could not have played better in recording a 3-1 record during the regional with 27 strikeouts and just two earned runs allowed over 31 1/3 innings.  This included a no-hitter Saturday against Southern New Hampshire, the program's first no-hitter in at least the last 14 years.

Burch (21-6) closed first for the most single-season victories in team history and her 179 strikeouts are second.

Mirenda this week was on fire in collecting seven hits and three RBI, including the tying RBI on Saturday in Goldey-Beacom's 3-2 victory over Wilmington.  GBC rallied from 2-0 down entering the seventh of that contest to force today's ultimate game.

Chasedy Johnson (Egg Harbor City, NJ) had five hits with Radcliffe and McKenna Frank (Oxford, PA) getting four apiece.

Both teams today had their chances with a combined 16 runners left on base, but the Wildcats came through in the last of the eighth inning.  Haley Grygo drew a two-out walk, took third on Bella Barnes' single to right and scored when Sydney Hatch ripped a single down the left-field line.

Burch struck out four over 7 2/3 innings with Autumn Simpson (Elkton, MD) and Josalyn McMillan (Rising Sun, MD) getting two hits apiece.

Maddie Vollmar (5-1) struck out three in tossing a nine-hit shutout and Barnes closed with two hits for Wilmington (35-17), which will battle Pace in the East Region final.
