Softball Falls, 2-1, to Wilmington in the CACC Final

Goldey-Beacom made its first trip to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference final, but was handed a 2-1 loss by Wilmington in Bridgeport, CT.

The season is far from over, one that has featured the Lightning (37-14) tying the school record for most victories in a season and the squad winning multiple games in the CACC Tournament in consecutive years for the first time.  That journey is expected to continue in the NCAA Tournament when the brackets are announced Monday at 10:00 am on NCAA.com.

The NCAA Tournament is scheduled to begin next Thursday and anticipated is the announcement that Goldey-Beacom will make the field for the first time in program history.  GBC was third in the latest NCAA East Regional rankings and eight from each of the eight regions make the 64-team field.

It has been a season already decorated with Caitlyn Burch (Mechanicsville, MD), Wynter Radcliffe (Glen Burnie, MD) and Ariana Mirenda (Reading, PA) each named first team All-CACC with Morgan McLane (Clayton, DE) and Bryn Bohmann (Saskatoon, SK) tabbed second team.  All five are seniors.

The squad was playing in the CACC Tournament a third straight year for the first time in 19 seasons and the aforementioned second-place showing bettered the program's third-place finishes from 2005 and last season.

Wilmington got all of its scoring on one play in the first inning for a 2-0 lead.  Bella Barnes lifted a sacrifice fly to score Tristyn Steart and Maddie Vollmar crossed home on a throwing error.

GBC in the seventh had the bases loaded with one out still trailing by two, but only could get an RBI single from Radcliffe before the final out.

Freshman Josalyn McMillan (Rising Sun, MD) rapped two hits for the Lightning with Stewart doing likewise for the Wildcats (31-16).

Burch, McLane, Mirenda, Radcliffe and junior Autumn Simpson (Elkton, MD) each made the all-tournament team.
