Softball Splits Two On Day One of Championship Weekend at the CACC Tournament

Goldey-Beacom resumed play in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament by dropping an 8-3 contest to Wilmington (DE) before notching a 3-0 triumph over top-seeded  Bridgeport in Bridgeport, CT.

Goldey-Beacom is in the elimination bracket and will be in action Friday against the loser of the day's first contest between Wilmington and Jefferson.  The first game is at 11:00 am and the Lightning's contest is at 1:30 pm.

Playing in the CACC Tournament a third straight season for the first time in 19 years and in championship weekend for the second consecutive season, third-seeded Goldey-Beacom made it to the double-elimination portion after gaining a necessary first-round split against No. 6 seed Georgian Court.

Goldey-Beacom (36-13) today began things against No. 2 seed Wilmington with two runs in the top of the first inning.  Ariana Mirenda (Reading, PA) lined a one-out triple, fellow senior Bryn Bohmann (Saskatoon, SK) walked, stole second and both stole their next base for a 1-0 lead.  Two batters later, senior Alex Lowry (Wenonah, NJ) singled home Bohmann to double the margin.

The Wildcats got one back in the last of the frame on Haley Grygo's RBI single, but the Lightning responded in the third.  Bohmann stroked a one-out single and, two batters later, scored on Lowry's run-scoring single to left for a 3-1 contest.

Wilmington leveled things in the last of the third with Grygo again coming through, lining an RBI single to plate Cassidy Zelano for a 3-2 margin.  Two batters later, Bella Barnes tied it with a run-scoring double.

Tristyn Stewart in the fourth gave the Wildcats their first lead with an RBI single and Barnes added a run-scoring triple in the fifth, making it 5-3.  Maddie Vollmar in the sixth got an RBI double before Grygo continued to have a day, crushing a two-run homer to left for the final.

Lowry and junior Autumn Simpson (Elkton, MD) closed with two hits apiece.

GBC got to Wilmington's Delani Sheehan, but it was not enough despite her giving up three runs and five hits over 2 1/3 innings.  Grygo went 4-for-4 with Barnes, Stewart and Gracie Mabrey rapping two hits apiece.

Things went considerably better in the nightcap, especially when the Lightning grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning.  Senior Wynter Radcliffe (Glen Burnie, MD) had a leadoff single, Lowry sacrificed junior pinch-runner Chasedy Johnson (Egg Harbor City, NJ) to second and the latter scored on Simpson's RBI single.

GBC made it 2-0 in the fourth.  Simpson led off with a single, reached second on an error, junior pinch-runner Alesia Doctor (Rising Sun, MD) got to third on a single from freshman Bri Cole (Rising Sun, MD) and scored on another error.

The Lightning added another insurance run in the fifth.  Mirenda led off with a single, was sacrificed to second by Bohmann, reached third on Radcliffe's single and scored on Lowry's sacrifice fly.

Mirenda went 4-for-4 with Radcliffe and Simpson getting two hits apiece.  Clayton, DE senior Morgan McLane (14-1) again was outstanding in the circle, striking out three over seven innings.
