Game Recap: Baseball |

No. 24 Baseball Gains Split at Dominican (NY)

No. 24 Goldey-Beacom cruised to a 15-2 victory in game one before dropping a 2-1 contest at Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference-foe Dominican (NY) in Pomona, NY.

Goldey-Beacom's penchant for putting up crooked numbers continued in the first inning of game one with a four spot.  Junior Anthony Charles (Mullica Hill, NJ) cracked a two-run homer with senior Braden Kolmansberger (Lewisberry, PA) and freshman Zach Smethers (Nazareth, PA) each crossing home on a wild pitch plus an error.

It was Charles' eighth home run of the season and 14th career.

Senior Mitch Jolikko (Middletown, DE) got an RBI single in the third and freshman Brent Williams (Woodstown, NJ) added a sacrifice fly to make it 6-0.  GBC got two more in the fourth with Smethers lining an RBI single and scoring on a wild pitch for an 8-0 count.

Smethers continued his solid day with an RBI triple in the fifth for a 10-0 margin.  Sophomore Bobby Stewart (Newark, DE) earlier in the day saw his conference home run lead tied by Charles, but regained it with a three-run blast in the sixth for a 13-1 contest and his ninth long ball of the year.

Senior Matt Benner (Souderton, PA) got a two-run double in the seventh for the final and the program's 199th victory.

Smethers had three hits with Williams and senior Adam McEvoy (Sewell, NJ) getting two apiece.  Franklinville, NJ freshman George Starr (4-4) made it three victories in his last four decisions, striking out five over seven innings.

Dominican in game two grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third on Erick Diaz's RBI single, but GBC rallied in the sixth.  Charles lined a one-out double, reached third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly from senior Jaden Dickerson (New Castle, DE).

The Chargers regained the lead in the sixth.  Myles Vazquez ripped a one-out single, pinch-runner Juan Peralta got to second on a passed ball, Ty Gilligan struck out, but Alexander Reyes came through with an RBI double to right center.

Goldey-Beacom (28-10, 18-4 CACC) got the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position with one out in the seventh, but Anthony Leak closed it for the complete-game win.

Junior Kory Williams (Pennsauken, NJ) had another solid outings, striking out eight over 5 1/3 innings.

Leak struck out nine over seven innings, yielding one run and four hits for the Chargers (27-14, 21-7).

In addition to its national ranking, Goldey-Beacom on Monday ascended to No. 1 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association East Region rankings.  GBC has been regionally ranked in this poll all season.

Goldey-Beacom on Thursday visits Chestnut Hill for a 3:00 pm doubleheader in North Wales, PA.
